Oversized for current volume they say.

When was it's climax? What do you think needs to happen?

If there are 3000 some odd surplus post offices out there, they needed a douche a long time ago.  Most of the time all I get is a PO box full of crap mail anyway.

The post office enables junk mail spamming of everyones mail box.  I think they are guilty for selling personal information.

Just sayin................

I have certainly seen an increase of Geico spam and similar as the real mail numbers decline.

I could live with mail delivery 2 times a week, 3 tops. Stager that around the area so they work full time 40 hrs a week and see what happens.

Case of a big government agency that refused to downsize until it is too late.  First thing to do is close lots of offices.  You can get stamps online or at most grocery stores these days and you can order supplied/have packages picked up from your home.  So they can make a good cut there by doing away with some buildings and related expenses.  Second I'd do away with Saturday deliveries except for priority mail.  Hell, for residential deliveries, they could probably go to a Monday-Wednesday-Friday delivery schedule (except priority mail option) and keep business deliveries to Mon-Friday.  Only mail most people get are bills and junk mail, so no need to get that every single day. Go ahead and raise stamps to 50 cents, that's still cheap for sending a letter across the country.  And I think their shipping rates (if it fits it ships) deal is pretty competitive to UPS and Fedex, they just need to get more online retailers to offer it.  Biggest problem is the USPS employs unionized government workers.  Going to be tough to cut down the labor expense, but that needs to be addressed as well.

Climax? IDK but they have been reducing the work force for years thru automation. Actual efficency has gone up yearly for several years but the economic downturn has meant less mail volume. Fuel cost is also a major issue.

What really sucks is the USPS has been the only Gov run entity to pay for itself with no IRS dollars(dont think this includes retirement benifits).

In the past congress has used the USPS surplus stamp revenue to fund other projects, causeing most of the rate increases. If congress hadnt constantly stripped the USPS of cash, rates would be lower and they would have enough $ to make it thru this recession.

FDR destroyed the Post Office when he closed all the retail mail stops and replaced them with independent federal facilities, including a local postmaster at every one.

The cancer of FDR lives on...

We do pay for ourselves... We answer to an oversite commitee in congress. We get to raise or lower rates every three years. based on the outlook we do a budget so the first year we make money, second year we break even and the third year we lose. Then, re-evaluate. Congress always aproves our hikes....

If I had to rely upon UPS, or FEDEX I'd be forced to go out of business.  In Alaska USPS is the only economical way to ship.

refuse to downsize ? ? ? ?

yeah ! the writing was on the wall 15 years ago. Contrary to pop. belief, volume isn't really down that much.

Keep in mind that 15 years ago we were the largest employeer. now we are 4rth after GM, Ford, Walmart.....

We had 850K workers..... 35% of that we could do without. Common opinion is that it's "Organized welfare" We carried those people who would otherwise be sucking the govt. tit.....
