What is it going to take for this country to realize that it is being divided and forced to oppose each other?
It really isn't hard to understand that one side are being taught to take everything they can while it is still here before the collapse comes. Glenn Beck is the one of the few and preaching that conservatives must PREPARE and take action and to DEFEND. Prepare for what? All I see is a country being divided and forced to oppose each other. Sounds like a civil war to me. I have no interest in going to war, let alone in my own country, against my neighbors. No thanks. Time for the high road. |

A REAL solution needs to be formulated, to fight Alinskyite tactics with reason. We cannot survive if we insist upon personalizing, polarizing and ridiculing. America is DONE if our national tone doesn't change. IMO, this country is weary to the bone of the hysteria, and people are ready for calm discussions of fact. |

A good argument could be made that the country was more divided - literally and figuratively - from 1861 through April 1865. So if less polarization is the goal, how exactly is that supposed to happen? Are conservatives supposed to be less concerned about $14 trillion in debt? Are liberals supposed to stop wanting to restrict gun rights? Less polarization is fine in theory, but as an end goal it is a mirage. Like the issues that divided the states in the 1850s, the issues that divide us now are far too important to be subjugated to the desire for less polarization. |

As far as I can tell, there is always another problem underneath, but attempting to solve the problem you see will bring the problem you don't into view. Polarization a problem? Polarization is taking place because shameless emotional manipulation is taking place (because shameless emotional manipulation is effective). How do we reduce the effectiveness of the emotional manipulation taking place? People must get distance from the manipulation, so they have time and space to think. This requires getting away from the cable news, the Big 3, the radio, the internet, and comparing different pieces of information against each other, in an effort to find truth from lies. Oh - and by what mechanism will each person do this? Their own personal knowledge of what logic is. How do we increase knowledge of logic of people? |

I think the fundamental problem is that no one thinks for themselves ... everyone just picks a flavor of kool-aid and starts drinking.
So how do we fix that? Answer: with the children. While the drive-by media is overwhelmingly biased they only have moderate control over the sheeple and how they vote. On the other hand take a look at education ... kindergarten through higher education. School teachers and university professors are, like the drive-by media, overwhelmingly liberal. Children spend 6+ hours a day, 9+ months a year with their grade school teachers. There have been countless examples of liberalism in schools posted here on arfcom ... if that liberal teacher is the strongest influence in their life (as many are with today's lack of parenting) then it is entirely likely that kid will end up with a liberal outlook on life. Just take a look how the <30 crowd voted in the last election .... Fundamentally journalism and education should be completely politically unbiased ... but it would seem in this day and age that being unbiased is completely impossible. Media being a commercial entity is subject to the principles of the free market economy. Liberal newspapers such the New York Times are beginning to fall on hard times as readership declines; while conservative newspapers such as the Wall Street Journal and cable news networks like Fox News are thriving. However, public education is completely controlled by government and not subject to the same principles as the media. This means that in order to remove the political bias, course curriculum and hiring/firing practices need to be improved. Once you weed out lousy teachers who only spout rhetoric and turn children into mindless drones you can begin to teach children correctly. Teaching children to think critically is of vital importance. Ingrain this one key principle into our children now and as they grow they will be less and less affected by media bias. Teach them to question everything, never accept something just because a journalist or teacher told them so, to always seek the actual source. This will lead them to the purest information and with the tools provided by critical thinking they will make better decisions. It is my opinion that liberalism appeals most to the lowest intellectual groups who are incapable of looking at countless examples of how liberalism punishes success and promotes failure. These groups blindly follow their liberal leaders who only seek power for themselves. Push our children to work harder, to be smarter, to learn from the past and liberalism will fade and this country will ride their success and again become that shining city on a hill. |

Personally I don't think that we've moved so far that the country is headed for an actual civil war. Of course if it does one day come to that, who knows, it could leave things better for us. I really doubt that though. In the meantime all you can really do is hold to your ideals, be prepared for anything, and see what happens. |

I think we need to step back from the term "Liberal", I don't believe that is who or what we are up against.
Take Shelia Jackson Lee and her constituents, Liberal doesn't apply here at all, it's pure racism and hate. Look at the constituents of Nancy Pelosi, they are only interested in opposition and defiance of all things conservative and Republican, they don't seem to be "for" anything, it's like they have a problem with authority figures. Take a look at the constituents of other so called "Liberal" politicians, like the out of work comedian senator from Minnesota, Al Franken. His presence is purely due to his constituents wanting to make a opposition statement, they don't seem to care at all about "Liberal" philosophy. I'm sure if you look hard enough you can find true liberals but most of what we see in Democrat Party politics today is Oppositional Defiant Disorder, hate and racism. |

I'm sure the: Riots Racially motivated Murders Trillions spent on failed Bailouts Housing market collapse Price of fuel ($4+ a gallon) Unemployment rate Libya Afghanistan My Dog's runny stool Are all directly attributable to Glenn Beck. I don't agree with everything Glenn says, but most of what he states is something the average chimpanzee could verify with a pc and 10 minutes of research. That is if the chimpanzee was so inclined. Here is the way i see it.
We as a country have no goals to work towards. There is no more "evil Empire to defend against, no technological rival to compete against, no great work to complete, and no vision for the future of our nation. The reason for this is that we have elected no leaders. We have nobody that inspires us to strive to be greater than we are. We have no Kennedy to tell us that we do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard. We have no Reagan to challenge our enemies. We have no one in our government that is passionate about our nation, our culture and our freedoms. So now we are left to bicker among ourselves. |

I will try to follow this up when I have more time with as much as I can put into the discussion. Please keep thinking about these things. I may have made false statements in the OP, but I am trying to make a point. I am guilty of hating democrats and giving into the path of aggression. One side is angry because they have nothing and are being given so much for free. The other side is preparing to defend themselves and their "rights" if necessary. We must ask what is truly important for the future of America. I am not going to further discuss what happens if we don't do what we need to. I am working on solutions and reaching out. What are you doing? Providing for your family? Trying to get by? Pay the bills? |

My parents considered themselves "middle class" and lost their souls trying to provide for our family. I am 23 and have been providing for myself since I have been able to work. Since I don't post much and have been here since 08 is there a cold spot in hell that we can re-title and sticky this as "the solutions thread" so just maybe my point gets across?
I have been exhausted, confused, and completely lost. I have found my passion in life and hope that I do not get derailed. |

The idea that either side is "evil" is the problem.
Democrats/liberals don't want to destroy the US just for fun, or just to be mean. They honestly think the things they do are for the good of everyone. Conservatives on the other hand don't want the poor to suffer, and the rich to get richer; they want prosperity for most. They honestly think the things they do are for the good of most. If both groups are viewed as "evil" then the only solution is to destroy the other. If both groups are simply "goodwilled but misguided," then the only solution is information and education. Any war in this country will not be fought along geographical lines. If it happens, there won't be two sides. Worst case is decades of insurgency against a central government that simply has to take more and more power to survive. Best case is a break into 3 or 4 countries. We conservatives are losing the education battle though. We've got to figure out a way to make people uderstand some of the more complicated concepts of conservatism. We've also got to open people's eyes to the tactics the left use. Glenn Beck has been trying for years, and people were starting to get it, but he lost many of us when he failed to tell us what to do about it. Somebody on the right needs to not only unite the public, but give us some direction and hope. Not hope of a hand out, but hope of no more need for them. Right now all we seem to be getting is what really amount to unfulfillable promises. |
