I have a dirtbike for sale on CL.
I received an email asking if I would be around friday for the bike to be viewed.  I replied yes and this is the response I received.
Ok, sounds good.  Can you send me the VIN #.  I need to clear it with US customs by tomorrow to give me enough time, I would be bringing the bike to Canada.

Thanks,

Colby

I googled his name and it came back being from Saskatoon, SK which is a long way from central MN.  Would there be any harm in sending the VIN?  I don't see how it could be a scam, but who knows.

If you were in FL, I'd say it's a scam. Since you're in the frozen north, it's likely legit.

VINs are all over eBay motors and Cars.com.  Hard to make a sell without providing one first for the CarFAX etc...

Doesn't smell fishy to me.

Probably fishing for valid VIN's in order to rip off your VIN for scamming purposes.

There is more BS on Craigslist.  I have been selling a bike for a month.  I have had 14 people call and say they were on the way to look at it.  Only 2 actually showed up.  Waste of time.

I will go ahead and send it.  What's the worst that could happen?

He reports his bike stolen, gives your VIN, no-knock swat raid, dead dog, you know the drill...

FWIW, I like to get VIN info so I can CARFAX potential purchases.  No VIN = no deal.

While I lived in Maine I sold a motorcycle to a guy from Canada.  He said its worth the trip because motorcycles are cheaper here.  He showed up with a trailer with several motorcycles on it, claimed he raced them and came to the U.S. and bought several at a time.  He did not ask for a VIN beforehand though.

I talked to a guy in MI that told me 4 wheelers are cheaper in Canada and they drove up there every 2 years or so to buy new ones.

I guess he needs the registration info too

Hi,

Apparently the VIN # is not enough and I need the registration in order to bring it across the border.  Can you please send this to me.  I have to have it submitted to Customs by tomorrow.

Thanks,

Colby

Sounds legit.

Seriously.

Make him pick it up at your place and pay cash....The only real way to find out.

The guy cannot do much with your VIN, as you have the title.

No, but there might be something in the house that smells like it.
