1st post nails it.

To keep leeches and small fish away from your wedding tackle.

(I honestly have no idea why they have netting).

ETA: I wear boardshorts, they don't have the netting.

If you take a dump in the pool, it stays in your shorts instead of floating to the top.

Some swim trunks do.

When the sea lice get thick, that netting traps about a thousand of those little crustaceans against your balls.

For most guys it serves no purpose.  For guys like me, it keeps what appears like a third leg from bashing into my knee while swimming.

My GF just bought me a couple of new pair.

One Under Armour and one Nike. The UA are without the netting and the only pair I wear. I told her I was going to just cut the net out and she told me they were too expensive to do that to. I was thinking that is better than never wearing the damned things......

I have no idea why it is there. She says it is an "old man" thing and that the stuff kids wear nowadays don't have it.

Don't you hate it when you jump off the diving board to do a cannonball, and your balls slap the water first, before the rest of your body?

Ruins my day.

That's what I always thought. But now that I think about it the keeping critters out of your taint makes more sense.

And thus term: "Log on to your inter-net" was made.

You can buy ones without the netting.  I do.  I can't stand that stuff.  I have yet to have any issues with fish or other animals swimming up there.  I'll be knocking on wood now.
