Why do I keep losing internet connection when my laptop shows that my connection is 4 out of 5 bars?  We just switched routers, as we thought that was the problem, but it's still doing it.

Is it losing its Network Connection or its Internet Connection. If its just Intertnet I would be looking at the Modem or Service Provider.

Both, off and on.

Do you have a microwave or 2.4ghz phone near the laptop or router?    You might try changing the default channel on the router if you have a lot of neighbors with wifi.

This was happening to my son, I had to move the phone away from the wireless range extender or every time the phone rang, his XBox lost connection.

Cordless phone in the same room with the router.  It's around feet 2 away. I thought with a filter that wouldn't matter.

Im assuming you mean a DSL filter and it will keep your internet from dropping when the Phone is in use. But a seperate issue is if its a wireless phone it can screw with the Wireless signal hence they shouldn't be so close together or as was mentioned change the Channel of the router.

I used to work for one of the Bells supporting DSL. Panasonic cordless phones were especially bad about knocking DSL down when going on or off hook. No one I worked with could figure out why they were worse about that than anyone else.

If your phone uses the 2.4 ghz band, that could be your problem. You have a transmitter in the base, using the same set of frequencies as the wireless network. Try switching to a DECT 6 phone. "As DECT and DECT 6.0 do not operate in the 2.4 GHz ISM band, they are not subject to the interference arising in this band from its use by 802.11b and 802.11g WiFi, and 2.4 GHz cordless phones." (says wikipedia)

Just for kicks, make sure your notebook is not set to turn off the wireless modem after a specified time, to save power. But I'd bet the phone is what's messing you up. (Puts 25ยข on the counter)
