EPIC v. DHS Lawsuit –– FOIA'd Documents Raise New Questions About Body Scanner Radiation Risks - link
In a FOIA lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security, EPIC has just obtained documents concerning the radiation risks of TSA's airport body scanner program. The documents include agency emails, radiation studies, memoranda of agreement concerning radiation testing programs, and results of some radiation tests. One document set reveals that even after TSA employees identified cancer clusters possibly linked to radiation exposure, the agency failed to issue employees dosimeters - safety devices that could assess the level of radiation exposure. Another document indicates that the DHS mischaracterized the findings of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, stating that NIST "affirmed the safety" of full body scanners. The documents obtained by EPIC reveal that NIST disputed that characterization and stated that the Institute did not, in fact, test the devices. Also, a Johns Hopkins University study revealed that radiation zones around body scanners could exceed the "General Public Dose Limit." For more information, see EPIC: EPIC v. Department of Homeland Security - Full Body Scanner Radiation Risks (link) and EPIC: EPIC v. DHS (Suspension of Body Scanner Program) (link). ETA: Slashdot link, seems they are getting hit hard. http://news.slashdot.org/story/11/06/27/2012226/Cancer-Cluster-Possibly-Found-Among-TSA-Workers |

I was more worried about working around the scanners they use in the baggage areas(I never worked with the backscatter). Those things use a lot more radiation and I'm not certain they contain it as well as they claim. ETA- I agree with the post above, just someone looking for a free ride most likely. |

Just more govt leeches sucking at our tit. Oh my, I'll never work again, I'll have to be on "workmans comp" for the next 30 years in case it comes back.......................... Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of idiots if true. cancer cluster (KAN-ser KLUS-ter)
The occurrence of a larger-than-expected number of cases of cancer within a group of people in a geographic area over a period of time. |

They're probably getting it because of the enormous amount of hatred and generally negative thought energy directed at them. Anyone who'd make a 95 year old cancer patient take off her adult diaper to prove she doesn't have a bomb in it absolutely deserves to die a slow and horrible cancer death. |
| The millimeter wave microwave imaging machines may be even more dangerous than the backscatter x ray machines. There was a study released a while back which showed that millimeter wave RF exposure within a certain wavelength range (same as used for the machines) caused DNA damage to cells, and was considered a substantial cancer risk. |

Better them than us! If they are already seeing cancer from x hours a week over at most 2 years, then I'd expct frequent fliers to be catching cancer too. Flyer stand IN the scanner and get plasted, TSA stands outside the scanner. Oh I know... still, maybe now they'll have a hard time finding enough 'tards for the job. |
|
As much as I'm attracted to the poetic justice in all of this, you know it's BS. It's government employees (and willing attorneys) trying to get PAYED, son! This is just people milking the government tit for all it's worth, using their (otherwise unfortunate) cancer diagnosis in an opportunistic way. Is the cancer incidence rate among TSA employees statistically different than the general population, in any substantive way? |

So, I go and click the link, and it comes back with "Error executing error template." at Epic.org, I'm not finding the story :-\ |

There is no more deserving bunch that I can think of. |
