I have 6 DDR3 RAM slots in my PC(3 pairs).  There are 3 1Gb RAM sticks installed(1 in each pair).  I just bought a 4Gb RAM stick.  My question is, should I group 2 1Gb RAM sticks as a pair and install the 4Gb in its own pair?  Or, should I leave the 1Gb sticks where they are and install the 4Gb stick as a pair to one of the 1Gb?  Does it really matter?

I'd keep like pairs paired together, but I'm so far behind in current PC building practices...

Figure out how to test that as far as speed, etc.

Test your current setup, then remove all the 1GB sticks and install the 4GB by itself. Record result: I would imagine the 4GB would be faster.

If you add a 1GB stick in addition to the 4GB stick, is that faster, etc.?

If it's setup with all three banks in use then you'll want to continue that pattern. Go get two more 4G stick that match the first.

Option  3: buy another 4GB stick and pair it up

this.  the two different coloured banks are seperate,  you can keep the 3 sticks in there and put 2 or 3 more sticks in but i don't think you can put just one.
the 3 sticks should run in tri-channel mode and the two sticks should run in dual channel mode.
and i'm not even really sure you can run it mixed like that but try and see if it will boot.  the BIOS might yell at you thought.
ETA:

ETA2:   ram is cheap just get another 2 sticks and fill all six slots up.

Its an i7 Quad core 2.67Ghz

I currently have the 3 1Gb in the original spot(1 per pair).  I installed the 4Gb with one of the 1Gb.  I boot up and the BIOS says i have 7Gb ram.  So I guess that works.  I may just get 2 more 4Gb.

Read the link above, you may be short changing yourself on some performance.

Unless you are running windows in 64bit it won't even see more than 4 gigs.

Your OS is important here. 64bit is needed for more than 4GB of RAM. 32bit sees less than 4GB of RAM, regardless.

Who'd bothering running a new system on 32-bit nowadays? Sure, back when it was new I understand, but now what few programs don't work on 64 bit can run on any old XP box while everything else runs so much faster with 8GB of ram and all 64-bit software.
