Absinthe is now legal for importation, so I picked up a bottle of Lucid.  Anyone else ever try this?

They changed the laws some time ago.  It's more of a novelty than an enjoyable liquor.

My wife checked the website and found some pretty good drink recipes she made.

I probably wouldn't buy it again, but it's a nice conversation piece on the bar.

Absinthe is so overrated. It tastes like shit and doesn't even have thujone in it any more which is why people put up with the shitty taste in the first place.

Just get an Absinthe spoon; it is required if you have a bottle lying around...

It is used to dilute a sugar cube on the absinthe, which is the "proper" way to enjoy it...

I like the US Absinthe, the thujone content of absinthe of old is overrated anyway.

I like: Grande Absente, Kubler, and Lucid in that order.

Right, which is why it's legal now. It's not that lawmakers' view of it has changed, but that the booze itself has changed.

Incorrect.  It is the same as it ever was.

Absinthe is made simply by steeping herbs in distilled neutral spirit.  Not too unlike "highproof gin" if you want to think of it that way.
The thujone content is very minimal because you just can't get that much into a tincture without concentrating it.
To do that, you evaporate out the alcohol, which will increase potency.  You do that with enough stuff, and then add the extract back into the one bottle you want to drink.
And really, if all you want is a drink that will make you hallucinate, there are more effective ways of getting there.  All of them illegal, obviously.

But just like poppyseed bagels, the dosage level in absinthe is so low that you'll be falling over drunk LONG before you ever notice any actual hallucinogenic effects.

Silly me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absinthe#United_States

United States

In 2007, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) effectively lifted the longstanding absinthe ban, and has since approved many brands for sale in the U.S. market. This was made possible partly through the TTB's clarification of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) thujone content regulations, which specify that finished food and beverages that contain Artemisia species must be thujone free. In this context, the TTB considers a product to be thujone-free if the thujone content is less than 10ppm (equal to 10 mg/kg). This is verified through the use of Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry.

I bought a bottle from Europe a couple years ago.  I was trying to find a brand with the real wormwood in it.  I think its in there.
It tastes like shit and gets you fucked up.  To me its a different kind of drunk.  You won't trip your nuts off but it does feel unique.
The novelty wears off quick.

Had a slow night at the tattoo shop a few weeks ago and one of the artists had a bottle of absinthe. We decided to take some shots.

That stuff tastes like shit! Never again.

Am I the only one that likes the taste of absinthe? I can't stand it mixed (i.e. sugar with water drizzled over a spoon). I love black licorice and anise. I've tried several varieties of the real stuff (Suisse la Bleu, Blue Velvet, et al) and the non-thujone american type (Absente, etc). Like them all...although the real stuff tends to have a slight bitter aftertaste, IMHO.

It is going to make you nuts? No. Is it going to make you trip? No.

If you go in to it with the assumption that you're going to see shit and trip balls, you will be sorely mistaken.
