Cross posting from the precision rifles section.
I'm building a "broke ass" precision rifle. Using a beat up Mauser M1908 action, Timney trigger, EGW scope mount, Burris XTR rings, Bushnell Elite 3200 10x scope, and a Richard's Microfit stock. Barrel is being made by a local barrel smith who makes his own from bar stock. I went with an 18" in .308. My next issue to deal with on this is the bolt handle. The Mauser is a straight handle bolt, so I need to do something with it to clear the scope. After I cut off the original handle, chamfer the edges for welding, what kind of steel should I use for the replacement handle? I want it to be threaded for a knob i will order from Brownells, most likely. Any ideas? |

I don't know that you can find one already threaded so buy a Talley bolt handle as they are machined and it would be very easy for your gunsmith to turn down the knob and thread it. Midway and Brownells carry these for under $10.
Have you got a cost on having a new bolt handle welded on? Another option you may want to consider is buying a bolt body that already has a threaded bolt handle welded on. You can pick one up on Gunbroker for $60. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=236233055 Of course you will need to have this new bolt for your gunsmith before he chambers your barrel to make sure the headspace is correct. |
