When I first enlisted, we were building entire Nimitz class aircraft carriers for 4 billion. When you pay for R&D to buy 120 bombers but then slash the buy to 20, the unit cost is astronomical. We were offered additional airframes at $500M/copy which would have been a decent deal for such a large and complex aircraft. We made the same mistake with the F-22, paying the program costs for 700+ aircraft, and then only buying <200.  |
