Doesn't surprise me at all.... I was at friends house a few years ago...my daughter was 2 at the time....a small dog was out back, so myself and my daughter started petting it. It was a nice little dog....my friend comes up to me and says "you may want to watch it with your daughter...that's a pit bull". Fuck, could have fooled me...just thought it was your typical mutt.... I know he was covering his ass, but my friend was not a piece of trailer trash who treats his dog like shit.... |

"Nanny dogs"?? Sorry but I'm having a hard time buying this story. Just because there's a bunch of pictures of them with kids doesnt mean that people were leaving their infants alone with them while they went to work for the day. I'm not a pitbull hater by any means. Actually they're kindof nice dogs when you raise one from a pup. I just dont buy into old storys like this unless there's quite a bit of documentation.....not just a dozen or so picts. But this story has become viral now so I guess the author has achieved what he set out to do. |

I have a pit mix that loves my 2 year old Grand Niece, the baby hangs all over the dog and when the baby falls down the dog makes sure the baby falls on her.She will lay down so fast so she makes sure shes under the baby and you can see the dog is thinking about what shes doing.
That being said the baby is never left alone or even out of reach of a adult when she plays with the dog and it's not because the dog is a Pit is because it's an animal and you never leave a baby alone with any animal. |

Just because there's a bunch of pictures of them with kids doesnt mean that people were leaving their infants alone with them while they went to work for the day. They didn't leave the dogs as actual "nannies". But a pit bull that hasn't been beaten, starved, chained to an engine block in the yard, etc. is a perfect dog for kids. They'll put up with anything, are smart, and are fiercely loyal. An awful lot of the "pit bull attacks" are no such thing. Any big, scary dog that bites someone and runs off is a "pit bull", just like any scary gun is an "assault rifle" or "machine gun". Lots of "pit bulls" are weird mishmashes of a bunch of breeds, done by people who don't know what they're doing. Easily half of the dogs I deal with in rescue are not "pit bulls" at all... they're mutts that have been labeled "pit bulls" by hysterical, ignorant people desperate to justify their own blind bigotry. |

Petey, the dog in The Little Rascalls, was a pit bull. The Buster Brown shoe mascot was a pit bull RCA's Little Nipper was a pit bull Spuds Mackenzie was also a.... wait for it...a pit bull.... Of course, it's not smart to leave a baby alone with any dog.... I think the media is more vicious than the dog breed. What about german shepards, bull mastiff's and rotweillers? Those dogs can be trained to be vicious. Not to mention, those little yippie dogs that bark all the damned time... Hell, a bull mastiff took a chunk out of my face when I was a little kid....I pet the dog the wrong way...once... (nothing happened to the dog...I just learned a valuable lesson on how to treat a dog). |

The first "Dog Hero" from WWI was a Pitbull named Stubby. The RCA dog was a pitbull. Buster Brown was a Pit Bull mascot. Teddy Roosevelt raised Pitbulls. Pitbulls were quite popular and well regarded in the 19th and early 20th C. Its only in the last 50 years that they have been unscrupulously breed and consequently the breed has suffered. But then the GSD was brought over after WWI, and you know what they say... If its not a German Shepherd Dog, it's just a dog... ![]() |

sorry you guys, but most of the dogs you're listing were not pitbulls. Spuz, Petey, and TR's dogs were Bull terriers. Pit bulls are American Staffordshire Terriers.
I don't care if you own one, I'm sure you have great dogs. But you should look up the breed sandards, they are two different breeds. The author of that article should have done better reseach. I thought the same thing last night when I read it. |

I agree with you about the lumping of breeds, which has not helped the pit bulls reputation.
I guess what I'm getting at is when I hear pit bull, I think American Staffordshire Terrier. As I am sure most people going off media hype do also. When I think little rascals I picture bull terriers. Regardless all dogs can be dangerous. I own two blue heelers, and they are a mouthy breed. They like to bite, its in their blood from being bred to heel cattle. They are great friendly dogs but nip me all the time. If you own a pitbull good on you. Peoples reactions are gonna vary. I just think if you own a Pit bull, you can't go around saying its the spudz mackenzie dog. Which was my complaint with that article. |
| I would not leave any dog alone with small children unsupervised. Any dog is capable of having a bad day or mistaking some behavior in the child as a threat. I just watched an Anatolian Shepherd in the ring today at an AKC conformation show take a bite at the judge - the dog had no history of any such behavior, and it was a trained show dog. |

Agreed, animals can be unpredictable....so a small child should not be left unsupervised around one.... However, a child needs to learn the basics of encounters with animals in general....domestic or otherwise....it's a basic life skill that has saved me a lot of trouble over the years. I don't even own a dog....But an American Staffordshire Terrier or "pit bull" seems like a nice dog to own if you remove the hype. One of these days, when I have the right situation on the home front I will probably own a dog or two. |
