It distresses me that the NRA pushes LifeLock (and for that matter, those "we buy gold" types) upon its membership.   Oh well, they're not perfect.

because what you really want to do is put all your personal, private information in one centralized database with thousands of others, where it's ripe for the taking.

SSN, residence, aliases, first dog's name, favorite color, etc..

no thanks.

I think it's  total :

Another company trying to create a market and using scare tactics to  sell services to people who don't need them.

If you properly protect your info. you'll be fine.

I actually called and tried talking to one of their sales people. She had no idea how it worked and couldn't explain anything to me. I can't say that many customer service reps help when called, but this lady was clueless as to anything other than how to sign you up.

I don't see any value to the service they offer.

None whatsoever.

All they basically do is request a hold or lock on your credit which makes it tougher to take out loans using that person's identity. This is supposed to be reserved for when you suspect your identity might have been compromised.  Like if your wife got her purse stolen with your credit cards and birth certificate in it, you would request a lock on your credit.  But it can be deterimental to you if this lock is on all the time, you will have a much harder time getting credit.

And this is something you can do on your own without paying another company to do. Sort of like if I operated a business where you pay me to put your phone numbers on the Do Not Call list.  You'd be paying me something you can do yourself.

Your information is already out there ripe for the taking.
I can find your DOB, SSN, relatives, addresses, etc. in about 5 minutes online.

Sorry, guess I should've have added "If I have your name". My bad.
Seriously though, some of the cops at work were talking about this one night and I just laughed at the one guy who thought it would be hard to find him or his info. Within 5 minutes on my iPhone I had his DOB, SSN, wife and kids names, their DOBs and SSNs, home address, name of his mortgage company, his parents names, their DOBs and SSNs, their address, etc.
Unless you're living like Ted Kaczynski it's pretty easy to find your info.

Indeed.  I couldn't get past LifeLock becoming a single point of failure.

Not to defend Life Lock, but the premise behind Life Lock is if someone has all that info, they can't open bank accounts, credit cards, etc with that information.

Take applying for a credit card with someone's elses identity information, aka identity fraud.

Whoever they apply too will do a credit check, if it passes, chances are they'll get a credit card in that person's name, go on a buying spree, run off with all the loot, and laugh at the id theft victim.

What Life Lock does, and what you can do for free, is contact the 4 major credit bureaus and and tell them not to issue any credit in your name.  This shuts down the use of ID theft to obtain credit, the goal of most ID thefts.

When you apply for the credit lock, you get a super secret password and have to use that to allow a credit report at a per time fee, $10 or whatever.

But to the doubters, the Life Lock dude openly declares his name and SSN, try to get a Visa card with that. Good luck

Supposedly LifeLock isn't allowed to place fraud alerts with the credit bureaus anymore.
