We don't use our land line much - most of it's use is with solicitors. The National Do Not Call list is good in theory...

Anyone have experience with MagicJack? I'm ready to ditch AT&T. Our cell service at the house is not the greatest

otherwise I would not be considering it at all.

I heard call quality can be marginal. Also the computer it is hooked up to need to be on. I guess my main question

is can the computer be in Standby and will it wake up when a call comes through?
I really don't want my computer

up and running constantly.

What are the Pros and Cons?

Thanks!

I don't know if the computer can be in standby for it to operate.

My parents have had it for a couple of years now and it works fine for the most part. I think some of it depends on your internet connection speed.  There have been times in the past where it would get spotty and we would have to hang up and re-establish the call, but that seems to have gone away since they upgraded their DSL service.

The big disadvantage is having to have the computer on all of the time, and if you lose electricity you lose the line. There have been many times when I lost electrcity but my normal land line telephone would still work.  My parents use their cell phone as a back-up.    Since the program takes up some processor performance, they also use a dedicated computer just for the Magicjack, but that's not an issue for them since they always have extra computers lying around because building them is a hobby for my dad.

The big advantage of course is the cost and the lack of long distance charges. My parents both love that since their kids and many other relatives are LD calls.

That's too bad. I would hope they are working on that somehow.

My antivirus program will wake the computer up when it's time for a scan.

I bought it, used it for a week and quit.

I have been using Google Voice for all my voicemail, and for some reason Magic Jack thinks that I should not be able to disable their voicemail or modify it to ring forever, etc. So I was forced to use their voicemail.

Dealbreaker for me.

I have had it for a few years now
purchased the five year plan
always leave the DVR pc on anyways so its plugged into that pc
never had any problems except for the fact that its plugged into the house making all my jacks hot....not enough power to ring all the phones. other than that its great
its great, no problmes, I love it, hardly use it..just like the land line I got rid of

Have had it for a few years. Some rural exchanges don't work.

Sometimes the call quality sucks.

Last 2 months it hasn't worked at all. I think the little magic jack box broke. It will not recognize a phone when a phone is plugged into it.

I've been using it with a thin client.

Up until it stopped working, I was happy with it.

ETA This thread made me look at it again, and I have it working now. If you run a remote admined thin client, the audio when you connect to it must be set to remote computer.

It was not the magic jack. it was my stupidity

ooma, it's $200.00 (as I recall) I've had it for two years, no monthly bill. I pay nothing monthly, but i think you have to pay the tax monthly now. Its like $3.00 a month.  You can port your number for small fee. Great quality, great deal

I have MagicJack, and it's OK.  I have 2 issues.

1.  Lots of WiFi interference in my condo complex makes my connection unstable enough that call quality can suck.  Not MJ's fault.

2.  Forget faxing through it.  Some people say they've been able to pull it off on a full moon on the seventh Sunday after sacrificing a chicken.  I haven't.

I got my dad a NetTalk Duo for Christmas and he seems to like it.  Same basic concept, but it doesn't require a computer to be on 24/7.

Any idea when the release of MJ2 is ?

Ooma - it's a standalone box... the box is pricey, but it comes with "free" lifetime service (only pay the taxes and fees that would normally get tacked onto your phone bill).

If you got on the bandwagon earlier, you wouldn't even have to pay that....

3 yrs, $20 for the plug, $60 in fees, and love it.
I get an email for voicemails, I can hear those from my cell phone.

My in laws can chat all day and night when they are here and I dont care- costs me nothing.

I freely give out a home phone # cuz I dont answer the damn thing.

I bought a set of cordless that run off charging bases and one main remote wireless base thats plugged into the MJ.

My PC is always on anyway.
MJ works GREAT for me, is cheap and has good quality. And the international is really cheap and good quality too.
