Whatever the cause, assume it happens: at what point do you put plans in action? If part of your plan is an evac, you want to do so before everyone else gets the idea.
I would imagine preparedness and action in stages - 1) something gets your attention, 2) you dust off your plans and start to stage, 3) time to act. What event / indicator would convince you to move on stage 3 above? For that matter, what would prompt action in any of the 3 stages? |

Have a basic kit ready to go in 5 minutes or less, everything tagged and organized in one place. Have enough cash to get you where you're going to. In case of a man-made or natural disaster we are BO. Otherwise we plan to BI. This is right along the correct lines of the post. I should say that I'm in a fairly large city, so making it out becomes an issue. |

Preparedness is not a fixed-point line one crosses...it is a constantly evolving and changing strategy depending on current situations & likely potential threats of the day.
ETA: But it tends to primarily focus on Food, Clothing, Shelter and the means to obtain/defend those things. |

since my situation requires mobility in a lot of scenarios, i prefer a 5-step to a 3-step, somewhat like the old DEFCON. we call it emcon...super-creative! 5––normal 4––heightened state of alert (life continues, but situation-specific SA is prioritized. heads-up messages sent down the communication tree) 3––full alert (situation is priority 1. continuous contact with the tree. review SOPs with group. positively establish which options are in play, and what event types will trigger them) 2––initiation (action imminent. option-specific preps begin––if we're mobile, for example, we load vehicles. if we're sheltering in place, fill the bathtubs and water buckets. that kind of thing) 1––execution |
