My car has been acting up lately so I took it down to the shop, and they tell me the pcm ignition module is not working properly. So I'm looking at $700 for a new one. Is there anywhere I can get one cheaper? Is it possible to do it myself? 2004 Ford Taurus 3.0L v6.

Not a recommendation, I just googled it...  Not too different than your $700 quote.

You could always go to the junkyard auto recycling center.

Get the part number from the dealer and do a google search on it in combination with the word "sale."

You might be able to find the part cheaper online.

Then do a google search for "replacing PCM ignition module Taurus" and you might find out how to do it.

I had to replace one of mine.
It has to be the EXACT same vehicle. It will need to be programmed.
I didn't want to take the chance of buying the wrong part, so I had the shop do it.
It sucked because the car still ran fine but because a trouble light was on, I'd never be able to get it to pass inspection.

If you buy a new one from the shop make sure that it will fix the problem.  Did they properly diagnose it or are they just throwing parts at it?  Electrical parts are non returnable and you could end up with a part you didn't need.  Get it in writing on the Repair Order that the $700 part will fix the problem.  And you will not be charged for a part that didn't fix a problem.
