I used to have a Sony VIAO FJ270 laptop but it was stolen the morning I deployed. It was pretty beat at the time. It had fallen and cracked the case right on the corner of the internal modem, the charger port only worked if torque was put on it and keys were broken off.

I'm looking for damn near the same thing, just something that works faster, has better speakers and is tougher.

Any suggestions folks? Thanks!

Despite the hate for macs here, the macbook pro is an excellent notebook.  They have a solid aluminum chassis, and can take quite a beating.

If you're looking for something in the PC world, some of the business class Lenovo laptops have a nice internal rugged frame, and shock isolated components.

Hey, careful now. I'm a Star Wars nerd/geek and claim that title with pride.

Looking to spend? Around a grand, plus or minus a bit.

Seriously dude?

I mean, if you take that offensively, sorry.

May I suggest getting some thick skin really soon so others that mean true harm won't get to you?

For those who did, thanks for the help. I really need to get with the times.

In layman's terms ( so I have a clue about what you're saying... I'm not up to speed on computers these days ), what's so special about this thinkpad?

Does it lose anything to the Sony line? Why are they so much cheaper?

ETA - Do they come with a built-in wireless modem?

Oh, I'm not butt hurt or insulted, I just don't like to assist the ill mannered.

When you're paying for my consult, you can call me anything you want. When you're asking for free help it might be a wise idea to be a little nicer.

Well, sorry I guess. Seems not everyone shares my sense of humor. Nothing wrong with that.

Thanks for the help anyways.

The Macbook Pro is going to be tough to beat...

I doubt you will find a better made laptop.

I don't own one anymore... I wish I did.

I was going to reply "Wait, wait, wait, wait......wait.......you callin' me a nerd? "  But alas, I was pre-empted.

For the $1,000 you are looking to spend, you can get a very nice laptop.  I'd go to www.newegg.com and browse what they have in stock that fits your budget.  If you tend to use the warranty often enough, Dell has some fairly decent consumer focus'd laptops as well.

Sony=overpriced LABEL you are buying. Buy a Macbook pro if you buy in the Sony range, they are at least worth the price compared to a shitty Sony.

Thinkpads are built very well. Magnesium frame, rubberized plastic covering the computer, strong screen support and hinges. Great machines.

A Thinkpad will come with as much as you can afford to put in it.  Buy from the Lenovo Outlet for screaming deals with a full warranty, and AVOID the Ideapads. They are consumer grade shit.

Plenty of equal if not better built laptops out there in the same price range. Lenovo, HP, Dell all make similar grade and better machines.

I've never handled a laptop that felt as solid...

Specs wise, sure... Build wise, I'm not sure what would be better.
