I've got a poster with all of the 2001 crew's signatures over their aircraft.

Gonna give it to my kids one day.  They were all super guys.

I was fortunate enough to have grown up next to a master jet base and saw those guys do their thing every summer.

But I wonder if the Chuting Stars are still active.

Very cool picture but I'm relatively certain the text explaining the distortion around the jet is BS.

No it's not heat it's just moisture in the air creating the "envelope" as the jet passes through it.  If it were a little more humid you would see one behind the canopy and another aft.  Not fast enough to get a boom out of a Hornet, they try but she's hard to pop at sea level with a Legacy Hornet.
ETA:  Here ya go...

I got to fly in Fat Albert for one of the air shows.  A miserable experience.  The ziplock bag contains my breakfast...

I got to meet them all and get their autographs after the Naval Academy graduation show back in the 90's. Very cool experience for me as a kid.

ETA: I took some photo's with my dad's FA 250.

I take the kids every year.  First time I saw them they were flying F4 Phantoms.

Fleet week in SF.  Great show.  The sneak pass never fails to scare the bejeezus out of the crowd.

I love their mentality - "...glad to be here...".  We use their briefings as training material for team building.

I got a "private" Blue Angels air show when I was TAD to the fuel pits at NAS Oceana.

The Blues came in, hot fueled, and did a practice practice show the day before the air show.

A couple of us drove a fuel truck as close as we could to the center of the field.

One of the routines is the 6 jets split up and converge from 6 different directions over one point. We were almost  exactly under that point, it was indescribable!

Cool pic!

I snapped this one last summer at the Dayton Airshow at Wright - Patterson.  Gonna have to get on the driver of #4...looks like he's just a hair out of position

Link to rest of the album (that photo was by far my best).

That job does not suck.

My dad used to have an apartment by Coit tower in SF, during Fleet Week the Angels were using it as a landmark.

I remember looking into the cockpits as they flew past the balcony.

Good times.

Have the San Fran sickos complained about the environmental impact yet?  Damaged the air or some crazy shit?

Those are shock waves building up as the plane moves through fluid. Google "schlieren wind tunnel photos".

It's an amazing picture.

They've actually knocked pictures off the walls in my living room doing the high-speed pass thing.

This happens about twice a week:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TdLfNCVwQo

Zero gravity boobies on Fat Albert (boy... that don't sound right.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn4kUzhR5Rg

Funny story––  After the ride, I went back to work and mentioned the above incident.  With proper embellishment, of course.

Turns out it was the dude's ex-wife

True story––

They got a plaque or two from the AF Thunderbirds (you know.. expressing their high profession esteem for the Blues).

They got them mounted above the urinals in the hanger.

At 500 MPH, there are parts of the flow that are supersonic.  What you are seeing are indeed shock waves.

I first saw them in these F9F Panther jets.

Think "Bridges At Toko-Ri" action...

The little Navy chick?  Looks doable from what I've seen
