What are your opinions on tiny surveillance devices that can be placed anywhere, worn, et cetera? For instance, say you could put tiny cameras on the corners of your car that could record 72 hours in a loop –– motion while driving, frame differences with time stamps while parked (i.e., motion if there's someone in the field of view, otherwise nothing). I think such technology is inevitable and would be useful, provided it's privately owned and monitored –– in that, private citizens will come forward with evidence if needed to catch somebody. I think the presence and possibility of such technology is a significant deterrent to random acts of violence and violent escalation of personal crime. Would you invest in such technology?

Like anything, it all boils down to cost. If they cost 50 cents, I'd stick them everywhere, just for fun. As it is, I have a hard time pulling the trigger on one to use professionally.

if its not seen   how will the cops be able to arrest you in your own garage for filming him..  ?

think of the little cops..

with that said.. I was given a device as a gift once..  fit just behind the rear view mirror..    recorded in a 12 hours loop

at the time all it was .. was a "cool " thing...    now i would love to have THAT model  but all i remember was it was small.. and recorded in a 12 hour loop..

You would need a dvr system or a computer system in the car to record it all.  That would require at least one additional battery to run that equipment.

Everything you said would be do able and could be done with a laptop and standard video camera.  There is better equipement out there but that would get you started.

You could do it with a lot less power than what's needed from a car battery.

go to ebay and look for 808 camera #3...not quite 0.50 but its pretty close for the quality of video it puts out. you could velcro that sucker anywhere.

Just like any technology it is a violation of human rights until it becomes cheap technology and we can't resist implimenting it everywhere.  ie video cameras, gps surveylence, those things on cop cars that scan your plates.

If you had specialized equipment maybe.  Ever try to run a laptop 24x7 on a car battery and power invertor?  I have.  The marine trolling motor battery didn't even last 24 hours and it is designed for long periods of constant low power draw.

Likely the  INVERTER was drawing 8 or 9 times the net power required by the Laptop.
Running a  DC powered device from a switching AC power supply,  in turn powered  from a  Dc to AC power inverter is far from an ideal  use of  stored battery power.
Likely less than 5 % efficiency overall.

You can get cameras that record directly to a memory card, cheap.  Recording to a laptop would be stupid.

How you going to process the video to enable the motion detection the OP talked about.  Not to mention a memory card gives you hours of storage, not days like the OP wants.

Shouldn't be too bad. I'm not talking about a redneck nerd contraption consisting of a laptop and a few webcams, I'm considering purpose-built custom electronics and software that utilize low-power components with the goals including long battery life, compact size and surveillance capabilities with intent of acting as a deterrent to interpersonal criminal activity.

That would be great if you could put something like that together and have it affordable. Good cameras start at about $100. Cheap 4 channel DVRs start at a little over $200.

I have one of those keychain DVR cameras, and it's sound activated instead of motion activated.  You turn on the sound activation feature by holding down the power button for a few seconds.  If it's in an otherwise quiet interior space and recording intermittently, a 16GB MicroSD card should give you all the recording time you need for a few days.
