well, dogs normally will kill cats on their own. but throwing a cat over a fence into a dog pound is a bit severe. same thing here. if he was going to use a squirrell for bait, he should have at least been using fishing gear to catch the damn fish... needless waste of a squirrell.   plus squirrells dont normally swim.

the animal did not fall out of a tree, it was thrown into the water by a human

do you really need an explanation on how this could be considered wrong

Largemouth will eat pretty much whatever they can swallow.  Ducklings, squirrels, mice, etc.

That squirrel was dead by the time it hit stomach. Bass have a sort of macerator in their esophagus, looks like four bony plates, that basically crush food as they swallow.

Squirrels don't have to fall out of a tree to end up in the water. I've seen them swimming across a local resevoir. Simply taking the shortest route to get where they want to go. The only problem I have with this is the guy didn't rig it with a hook.

Do you step on worms before you put them on the hook?

I get why some people would see it as cruel but I don't see it any differently than feeding mice to snakes and chickens to gators. Odds are it's a private pond and he wants to raise some monster bass.

Either way my point was about the guy in the quote from the comment page saying that a squirrel wouldn't naturally find its way into water.

It wouldn't be a good lively bait then.  Do you kill minnows before you put them on a hook; or worms.

It would not work as well then, would it?  Squirrels are rats with better press.  They get eaten by predators all of the time.  Here is a shocker: meat is not grown in cellophane covered packages in the grocery stores.   Animals actually get killed to get the meat.

How the fuck would he be harming both of them?  Bass eat birds and any thing that is of edible size in the water. I see no difference in feeding a mouse to a pet snake or feeding a squirrel to a pet bass in your pond.
