Can someone explain why we say "German Shepard dog" and not just German Shepard? I have a yellow lab and have never called or heard one called "yellow lab dog" and I have a pointer. Same thing never heard one called "pointer dog" ect
Everytime I see it here I think WTF ??  Is it something that is said to make the bread more special or what. Kinda goofy .
I know whenever someone has said  " I have a German Shepard " I have never thought to ask, you mean a dog? Anyway flame away but I think  it's dumb. Somewhat pretentious.

The German Shepherds herding their sheep don't like it.

Wait, bread? What bread?

Its because in German they are called Deutscher Schäferhund which translates directly to German Shepherd Dog. The name has stuck and is part of the official name. Most people do only call them German Shepherds unless using the abbreviation GSD.

Because they are the best breed in the world and so smart we need to remind ourselves they're dogs.

I don't think I've ever heard someone say "German Shepherd Dog" but I have seen the abbreviation GSD which is totally unambiguous.

If you used the abbreviation L or YL I would have no clue what you were talking about. GSDs are just awesome that way.

Sounds like a good reason to me.

The official AKC breed name is actually 'German Shepherd  Dog'

Some people say GSD, I prefer BMF.

It's more tactical to say GSD than German Shepard. (really)

That's to differentiate them from a beer-swilling goat-herd name Fritz.

If you don't specify "dog," everyone thinks  you are referring to Heidi.

I prefer "psycho" or "neurotic."

Yeah, bring on the hate.  But more than half of the German Shepherds I've seen were either WAY too aggressive or complete nervous wrecks that would slink off in a corner if you called to them.

Or in one case, a really scaredy cat that barked it's head off and growled at me with hackles raised, then backed off and slunk away a bit when I squared off to it and yelled at it , then ran up and bit me on the thigh when I turned around to shut the gate.

Maybe that kind of crap is just poor training.  I dunnno.  I don't trust them, tho.

I've only seen the GSD terminology used here and never in the real world.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone IRL say the "Dog" part.

Because we have to remind ourselves that the GSD is just a dog.  They are too damned smart for their own good.

Because saying "The most incredible animal you will ever own"

is too long....  GSDs are the Perfect Dog

Exactly my point. In all my 45 years I have never seen or heard the terminology used anywhere but here.

Then it's another ARF-tactical, tier 1 creation.

Instead of saying 'dachshund', people say 'weiner dog'.
Better than just saying "I've got a weiner..."
