Why are their appointments for life or until they choose to retire?

Would you be in favor of term limits for the Justices?

Here's a pretty good read.

Probably to make them unafraid of losing their jobs if they were beholden to someone.

If there were term limits the constituion would have no meaning because the Justicies would rule how ever the President(at the time) wanted them to rule.

Their appointments are for life, and this applies to all Federal judicial officers, not just those on SCOTUS.  However, they can be impeached and potentially removed from office as a consequence and they can also choose to resign their office.

IMO judicial terms should either be for life or just one term but for a lengthy number of years, 30 years at least.  Having them depend on anyone for the continuation of their being in office defeats the purpose of having an independence judiciary, regardless of whether it is the "people," a single person, or some other body that they are dependent on.  Instability is also bad in this sense, which is why terms should be lengthy.

I think there should be an age limit of some sort. How in the hell is a 90+ years old justice going to understand a case involving modern technology?

I think 65-70 years old should be the limit on ALL judges, Fed or local, IMO.

There is an amendment on the ballot in OH this Nov to raise the mandatory retirement age to 75.  I am voting for it.  I think people are "with it: later in life than they used to be.
