OK,
I heard this one the other day, anyone got a good explanation for this?

3 men stay at a hotel that costs $25 per night. The front desk accidentally charges the men $30 for the room ($10 per person). The front desk clerk feels bad, so he gives the bellboy $5 and says to split it between the men. The bellboy gives each man $1 back and pockets $2.

Each man payed $10 initially.
Bellboy gave back $1 to each

10-1= 9
each man payed $9 for the room

9 * 3 = 27
27 + 2(in the bellboy's pocket) = 29

Where is the other dollar?

Got it now. I feel like an idiot, but it makes me feel better that some of the other people who were around when this was told were electrical engineers. They didn't get it either. I guess if I thought about it some I probably would have figured it out.

I went the easy route and asked GD.

The problem is that you are changing the premise halfway through it.  They paid $30 for the rooms.  The $5 back means they paid $25 for the rooms as a whole.  They got back $3 and the bellboy kept $2.  $25 + $3 +$2 = $30.

They paid $30

They got $3 back = $27

They tipped $2 = $29

WRONG

They paid $30

They got $3 back = $27

The bellboy kept $2 = $25

$25 is how much the room cost.

LMAO oops, I added instead of subtracted. Let this be a lesson not to drink and post.

The real question is "why are you and two other men staying in the same room?"
4/10/2011 6:34:02 AM EDT
[#19]
They way your problem is worded it does not matter what the guys paid for the room. Bellboy gets a five he gives away 3 and keeps 2 that equals five. What missing dollar are you talking about?

[#20]
Yeah, an old trick question the way it is worded.

The room cost $25 and they paid $27........so the bellhop kept the $2 difference.

[#21]
There is no missing dollar
$25 in the hotel's till
$3 in their pockets
$2 in the bellhop's pocket
