My gf has gotten a bug on her computer.  I cannot get on internet explorer with it to download software.  I cannot get the task manager up to try and kill the application.  So, I went and bought some software from walmart in hopes of being able to open it up and install the software, however when I open the software to install it the virus kills it right away.  Is there anyway to force install the software.  OS is vista.

mash here

this is a good one, I used it yesterday to get rid of a "no safe mode menu" problem with xp.  it starts the computer using a linux based operating system, so there's not really a chance of the virus hijacking windows when you try to clean it off.  you can either use it from a usb drive of some sort or from a cd if you can burn a disc from an iso.  it updates from the linux looking interface, so you leave your ethernet cable connected when you use it.

Reboot to Safe Mode with Networking.

Install Malwarebytes from download.com or majorgeeks.com

Update Malwarebytes

Full scan with Malwarebytes and remove all items found.  Reboot to normal mode, install virus scanner and do full scans.

If for some reason the computer won't boot into Safe Mode, or the infection prevents you from DL'ing, updating and running Malwarebytes, then by all means try the recovery disk in the link above if your GF has her data backed up, but you also may want to realize that you're probably in over your head and have someone with experience do this for you.

if you have problems running your antivirus apps, go out and get rkill.exe to kill off any suspect processes. then run your scans.

I recommend the same, but with Superantispyware. It kills just about everything in one pass.
