I got delayed today for a transfer for the third time in 2 years (fifth time overall), but they never make any sense to me. I go in to buy a pistol and it goes through without any problems at all, less than 5 minutes, go in for a shot gun or stripped lower, delayed. I got delayed ONCE for a pistol, it seems completely random. Before anyone asks I've got a squeaky clean record, Biggest thing on it is a couple speeding tickets.

But my question is, how many of you guys have your FBI UPIN? Does it really make that much of a difference? How much does it cost? How big of a pain in the ass is it to get/ keep? Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks guys

I'm guessing you are already putting your SSN on the 4473, right? Because that's about as personal as it gets.

I used to get randomly delayed if I didn't provide my SSN. I haven't been delayed since I started providing it.

Edit for clarity.

Again, ATF does not run the background checks, You have to apply for a UPIN with the FBIs NICS center.

I have one, mine was easy because ID theft (some felon was using my info to buy guns and get arrested).
For the rest of you, get the VAF form and fill it out and send it in to the FBI along with fingerprints.  No cost (your PD might charge a fee to fingerprint you), no maintenance of any kind on your part.

They take 8 weeks to process it and send you a nice letter giving you a UPIN.  I have yet to be delayed or denied since I got mine in 2007.
ETA: if you google "FBI VAF" the second link is a .pdf of the application.  Print it off, fill it out, sign it, get a fingerprint card done from the local PD or other fingerprint place and mail it in.  Pretty easy.
