What would you guys recommend?

My budget is about $500, but I have a buddy who owns a jewelry store and can get me 1/2 off, so street or retail of about $1000 should do.

I'm looking for nice and sleek, something that would make a chick do a double take and think "this guy's not too cheap and not too arrogant"

I just picked a skeletonized Invicta up, because I like mechanical things and it was cheap and looks nice.

Watches are such a ripoff if you are not careful.

Marathons look nice, although they are kinda big. 44mm

You might look at Sinn.

Most women won't recognize a Hamilton.

For your needs buy a Tag Heuer Carrera.  But please buy an automatic, I just can't see spending more than a couple hudred on a quartz watch.

If you want a nice watch and don't care if people will notice it, buy a Marathon, Hamliton, or Tissot.  If you want bang for your buck go with an Omega.  If you want status buy a Rolex.

I'm not exactly trying to fall in love and have kids

I just need to get over the jeans and t-shirt lifestyle.

I'm leaning towards this, simple sleek:

That looks pretty nice. Me personally, I go for leather bands for a nice contrast that doesn't make the watch stick out like a sore thumb. I've been wearing a J.B. Gioacchino ESCULAP, with a sapphire blue face and shark skin band for a few years now. It's an amazing watch that doesn't stand out too much, but does get noticed and complimented on quite often. It was only supposed to be worn when in suite and tie but now I wear it almost everywhere.
