Hi all, I live in California and a numbers of years ago blew my money on a paper wieght of a geiger counter.
For a while I carried it everywhere i went. It even has gone through an xray security machine once at a traffic courthouse (forgot it was in my laptop bag) and yes that set off the Gamma Scouts alarm.
Everyday readings here in Northern California average about .17 Micro Sievert
Once in a while I can find some old mortar and brick structures that will give me a high reading of .35 Micro Sievert thats about the highest I've ever seen the Gamma Scout measure. (besides passing through the xray machine)

Over the next 10 days as things develop in Japan I will monitor my Gamma Scout very closely and give up dates. If numbers start to climb up above .30 Micro Sievert I will begin logging the data and posting graphs here.
I don't suspect I'll notice any changes in readings over the next 2 week but think it'll be interesting to see if my counter can detect anything vs what the media is reporting

I'm doing the same thing with my Terra-P. Normal in my area is 0.09-.15 microsievert/h. It has a default alarm set to 0.3 microsievert/h.

Here it is measuring some uranium ore.

I used to do work with radioisotopes at FDA, and at the Authorized Users' training, they said that there are some quarries in Mexico where the natural abundance of radioactive potassium is sufficient to increase the background radiation from certain ceramic tiles that were made from clay in this area.

Go out and make a record of your roof.  Also make a record in an outdoor area under an awning or something.

From that link:

"At the Fukushima plant, the amount of radiation reached around 1,000 times the normal level in the control room of the No. 1 reactor, and 140 times the normal level near the main gate of the plant at one point. It was the first time an external radioactive leak had been confirmed since the disaster."

Normal background is 2.4 mSv/yr = 0.24 REM/yr =0.66 mREM/day = 0.0274 mREM/hr.

At the main gate of the plant the highest radiation recorded so far was 140 x 0.0274 = 3.836 mREM/hr = 0.00386 REM/hr = 0.0386 mSv/hr = 38.6 uSv/hr

No, there is a small piece of uranium ore under my gieger counter, that I was taking a reading from. Also, that is a combined gamma/beta reading as you can see I have removed the beta screen from the tube. With the screen in place, the gamma reading is only about 25-28 microSv/h.

Just as a basline this mornings readings are the same as every other day. .17-.20 Micro Sievert
I also do not suspect I will notice anything unusal in the following days, but hey I blew my money on this thing and 99.99% of us have nothing more to go on about radiation readings for any "event" other than what .gov or the media reports

I do have granite counter tops in my kitchen, but they hardly register. Maybe .19-.2 uSv/h.
