I went to an OSHA refresher class yesterday and one of the instructors said that his first career was a "POW Interrogator." He said that they were smart enough to not take pictures or leave marks, unlike the .mil guys today. He was probably in his early to mid 60s. Is this guy legit? Was this actually a full time job in SE Asia?

The fact that he said "we were smart enough not to leave marks" indicates to me that he has no idea how our interrogations are actually conducted.

Age corresponds to the end of the Vietnam war?

I once worked with a guy who had been in one of the separate Ranger companies in VN, and he said that that was one of his collateral duties. He said that the threat to turn captured VC over to the ARVN Ranger guys was usually enough to get them talking.

Not every war is the same, and there are documented cases of us beating POWs.

Not enough information to make a call either way.

Anyone that thinks we didn't torture NVA and VC is kidding only themselves.

Did this guy do it? I'm gonna say probably not just based upon the general idea of how people age and are willing to speak about their past experiences. Unless he's unhinged, most will not talk about dark spots from their past until they've reached the age  where their mortality is imminent : eg,GI's admitting to shooting Germans in WWII after insisting for decades Americans would never do such things.

I'd say his age is right for Vietnam service, I was just wondering why someone would claim that as his job if it was just one of his duties. He was explaining all of the careers that he has had over the years, claiming that one as his first, and saying that there wasn't much of a market for his skills in the civilian world. He was making light of it and went on to another subject. I was just thinking that he was full of shit.

one of my older friends told me of stories from vietnam and prisoners.  i have no reason to doubt what he said, although I doubt any of it is documented.

I have seen pictures of Viet Rangers interrogating a Prisoner. Lets say the guy was not having fun and it looked like it was going to get worse.

I had a college professor who claimed to be a POW interregator.  His name was Steinbaugh, and we always wondered what side he worked for.

Let me guess, he used to "take two prisoners up in a chopper, throw the first one out at 200 feet and then take notes while the second one spilled his guts".

Just to clarify, I have no doubt that "we" interrogated Vietnamese POWs in every way imaginable. My question is, were there designated interrogators in Vietnam, or was that just a job undertaken by anybody handy?

This...and sort of the point of my first post:  you don't get accurate or good information from people by hurting them...you get what you want to hear.  Someone who was actually a trained interrogator/debriefer would know this.
