I'm getting to the point where I'm considering buying a shot timer to help with my pistol practice. What shot timer should I get? I'd like to have one that is reasonably compact and has a delayed start option because I'll probably be on the range alone a lot of the time.

I have a Pearl which was a knock-off of the original Pact.
Pact sued them out of existence, rightly so.
I've shot over a Pact 3 and it seemed to run well,
Probably what I'll replace the Pearl with when it dies.

The CED 7000 can now be had for $120 or so.

There is also a phone app by Surefire (haven't used it, though).

I have an old PocketPro that I picked up about 10 years ago... no complaints, would buy another.

We use a variety of them in our IDPA matches.  Haven't noticed any difference.  Pretty basic technology.

I have a CED 7000 as well.  The top buttons stopped working, so I sent it back to the manufacturer and they sent me a new one.  Pretty good customer service.

The local gun club has a bunch of Pocket Pro II's, which are a little bigger but work well.

There is an Android app that is a shot timer and I heard Surefire has an IPhone app that is one too.

I use the Competition Electronics Pocket Pro II

No issues so far. As long as you buy from a good company, you wont be disappointed.

The first timer I had a lot of contact with was the CED 7000 at a pistol instructor course last month. It does delayed starts, split times, par times, etc., and seems like the most compact of the timers I've seen.

+whatever on the CED 7000.  I had one of the PACT ones and it worked fine, but it was large and took 9v batteries ($$).  The rechargable battery on the 7000 is great, lasts probably 2 matches without recharging, and you can get a AA adapter as well for emergencies.  You can't beat the size, it is much easier to always have in the range bag.
