Serious question...can I open a Word, Excel, or Powerpig file on an ipad?
The little geek at the Mac store said no this past Saturday. I want a small device like this (replying from my 10" asus netbooknow...) Looking at the Motorola offering but $800

eta: wants an ipad and can't produce pics of wife? Google works too...

Just posted that the Xoom Wifi version will be out and priced at $530.

The 1st gen Ipad will start at $400 now... I've got a decision if the Xoom does indeed come up for $530.

Only thing I'm worried about are the lack of apps in android vs IOS.  If IOS had flash there wouldn't be a decision in my mind...

You can simply go to the apple online refurbished store and buy the iPad 1 for a discount of what it used to cost.  http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/ipad/wi_fi?mco=MjAzMTE2MTU

If you recently purchased an iPad 1 like last 14 days, they are mailing you a $100 coupon.  Not sure if you can get that any other way.

Yes you can open Word and Powerpoint files on the iPad.  Yes you can create word and Powerpoint files on the iPad and save them out to work on PC's with office.  NO they do not have Microsoft Word or Powerpoint apps on the iPad, but they have compatible apps for those files.

Gen 3 will be much better....but

Gen 4 will be much better than Gen 3....and

Gen 5 will be so much better than Gen 4.....

The thing about gadgets is "Moore's Law", every 18 months or so what ever state of the art thing you have won't be half as good as what's on the market.  If she likes the features of Gen 3 buy it.  Oh, and Gen 3 is a rumor.  It appears to have merit but I don't think any capabilities have been leaked.  I would imagine better graphics, perhaps better camera, slightly faster, etc.   IF it does come out in the fall.

No, they just announced Gen 2 on the 2nd. 3rd gen should be out in a year, so just tell her to sit in line at the Apple store on the 11th like everyone else; it looks like Bigg-A ain't doing preorders after the giant embarrassment of the Verizon iPhone4 launch.

LOL. Apple decides great trends in PCs? I suppose that's why they switched to Intel chipsets, ditched SCSI for IDE (briefly) then SATA, officially support running Windows on their computers, and moved from one-button mice to two.

Floppies died because better portable storage mechanisms became available (briefly zip drives <and maybe LS120 for a week or two>) but predominantly USB flash drives replaced them.

Flash will die because better technologies will replace it.

That's not exactly what I said.  There's quite a bit more nuance to it than that.

Flash will never die if Adobe has their way.

Fortunately, Apple and Google are doing everything they can to push it out.

Like I said, it's crappy tech getting replaced with better tech. When the iMac came out, flash drives weren't cheap & ubiquitous enough to be viable (plus the damn usb port was in a really inconvenient spot and non-apple USB hardware wasn't even supported in the initial OS release) and as a result lots of people bought USB floppy drives. When the tech became cheap & available, floppies went away because it was a better alternative. Flash sucks but there isn't a ubiquitous alternative available yet. Very few browsers render video in HTML5 yet. There are a lot of websites that still use flash for navigation (including a couple of gunsmith sites I was on tonight), so legacy support will be necessary for a while. Shit, I mean look at classicarms' website - looks like it's done in Word. Lots of non-computer companies paid to have websites developed years ago that happen to use flash and will have no interested in having it redesigned just because flash sucks.

Of course Adobe doesn't want flash to die - that's their bread & butter. It will die, or Adobe will come out with something else that sucks a tiny bit less and spring a deal with browser authors (or OEMs to have it bundled). Although I will be sad the day I can no longer watch pika.swf

My point was that no one will actually do it until someone forces them off of Flash –– in a similar manner to what Apple did to the floppy drive in their market segment.  Apple's doing what they can to do that –– and Google's working on the solution side to replace it.  When will they get there?  I don't know, but I know they're working on it.

As far as the floppy drive, everybody said Jobs was crazy to get rid of it, and all those other technologies had been around for years.  I think what Apple did helped to push the market off of floppy drives –– not so much by forcing the entire market, but by making it obvious it could be done.  Of course, with the ipad and the iphone, they're in a far better position to impose their will on the market.
