On Friday I spent some time with a few ladies that work at healing eagles.
The problem is lead poisoning. The eagles scavenge the shot for dead varmits that are left behind. The eagles tend to die a very slow and painfull death. Guys, If you shoot it make your shot count. If you're not going to eat it. Haul it out or burry it deep. |

Are you trying to troll? You do know there has been a lot of research done in this area and if you think that lead shot is causing lead poisoning in eagles, I have a bridge in NY for sale. Its nothing more than anti-hunting junk science.. Fishermen(I am a fisherman) toss more lead in the water supply in one year than hunters do in several decades I would bet and they are barley on the radar, though there are some extreme environmentalists that are trying to ban lead fishing weights to no avail I might add..
Im not gonna waste time citing articles and posting links, do your own research and look at it yourself. Heavy metal poisoning in predators(including humans) is more the result of industrial waste than shotgun BBs.. The anti's use it to push their agenda which is no hunting, no guns, etc.. Wake up. |

I think its fairly important to be responsible for your shots and what you're hitting (where its going). Solid cast lead is pretty environmentally stable if its just sitting there in hard earth.
I think its more about personal responsibility and trying to be good conservationists as well as responsible hunters and outdoorsmen

Please post the X-rays of the crops of the eagles showing the lead before you start laying blame. Eagles are resistant to eating carrion. And because their crops are more of a storage than grinder as in seed eating birds, it is rare that they accumulate lead. Besides, they DO vomit bone/hair balls, shedding the crop of such debris. Again, post the radiographic evidence. |

Hell my cousin swallowed a miniball when he was a toddler. He shit it out in a few without any problems.. Like I said, heavy metal poisoning is a result of industrial waste where it builds up through the prey to predator ladder. Besides, it is not metalic lead but oxides and compounds of lead that kill. Read up on it for yourself. Yes, there is heavy metal poisoning to wildlife but it isnt from hunters and lead bullets. |

I don't even remember when the study was initially made, so forgive my lack of cites.
But, the scientist that did the initial study that blamed ingested lead for the deaths of Condors and other carrion eaters later recanted his findings. The death rate was skewed by the oversight of the number of deaths by shooting. They counted the animals shot as part of the number that died from lead ingestion. I think he even discounted those deaths since ingested lead had little effect. The Dems, however, didn't like the recanted findings so they ignored them. Jim |

They said that since slugs are soft lead and lots of deer are shot and lost, eagles eat those wounded deer, lead and all. The claim was that less than 1/4 of a deer slug from a 12 gauge is toxic to an eagle if ingested. I called bullshit then too. Eagles have more to worry about from cars speeding by while they're eating roadkill than they do from lead poisoning caused by bullets or fishing sinkers. ETA-and this is coming from someone who enjoys photographing wild eagles almost as much as I enjoy hunting. |

Seed eating birds WILL become toxic from ingested lead as it lodges in the gizzard where natural stones normally grind their food. This raises the surface area of the now pulverized lead, increasing the absorption rate. Total residence time in the gut is low but the constant grinding assures lead toxicity from as few as 3 lead shot in the 2-7 range. This was well documented in waterfowl, forcing the adoption of non-toxic shot. The idiots used those studies and EXTRAPOLATED to raptors which I have debunked. Because raptors eat flesh, they don't have developed gizzards nor do they rely on it to grind their food. Being carnivores, they rely on protein enzymes and stomach acid. |
