I don't know a lot about cameras.   I know some of you DO.   Please, please recommend me a pocket digital camera in the price range of up to $500 that I will be able to depend on to take decent indoor pictures and outdoor still pictures IN THE AUTO MODE.   I am not interested in learning all the fine points of custom shooting.   I just want to take pics of a birthday party or something still outside.   I wouldn't mind a little zoom capability and I might occasionally like to take a closeup (I can read the manual that comes with the camera to figure that out).

I have been reading camera reviews on the net this morning until I am sick of them and I would rather get advice from a real, live ar15.com person.  I aways wonder when reading evalutions on the net who is writing the evalution and what is their relationship to the product maker and how much the company may be putting in their pocket to write favorable reviews?   Better to ask an ar15.commer IMHO.

Oh, FYI.   My wife also knows nothing about cameras and took it upon herself to buy one off of the home shopping network.   NOT GOOD.  She bought a Vivitar ViviCam 8400 camera that is a total POS.   It freezes up after every five or six shots and you must open the battery compartment and let the batteries disconnect for it to reset.   You then lose your current shot.   When it does work, the pictures turn out with blurry colors and poor focus.   About as much fun as owning an AR-15 that jams after every few shots.

I WILL use the advice I get from you all to buy my next digital pocket camera so please take a second to post me your recommendations!

Whatever you all recommend will be a step up from where I am now with my Vivitar POS!

The G12 is a very nice camera for the money.

I also have Panasonic Lumix cameras that I really like to use as my P&S, very easy to use - so easy even my MIL can use it!

Remember g12 and s95 are same exact camera except g12 moves controls to exterior of camera.  OP- if you want basic auto shooting go s95, you will love it.

This is exactly what I will do.   I'll start looking around for a decent price on the Canon S95..........

I may take this &^%$#  Vivitar POS to the range for target practice.   Just kidding, I think.

I've had Olympus, Nikon, Kodak, and Canon point-and-shoots. Out of them all, my Canon PowerShot has been the best. It's the SD1100 IS and is no longer available, but I've no doubt you would go wrong with the newer model.

Picked up a Canon SD780 from Walmart over a year ago.
I think it's 12 megapixels.

I also think they've quit making them, but last time I was in the store I saw  camera's up to 12 megapixels from various mfg's on sale for under/slightly over $100 including Canon's. They're getting so cheap it's hard not to buy another just for the hell of it.

My Canon is slim and takes great pics and video. The only real choice once I decided on Canon was whether or not the rechargeable battery was better than a camera that takes AA. So far the rechargeable battery life has been excellent. Downside is if I wanted an extra battery they cost close to $50 at the store. I could probably find one cheaper online if I decide to get another battery, but haven't needed one so far.

I took it on a 9 day Colorado elk hunt last fall (back country no electric to recharge), took a couple hundred pictures and the battery still had plenty of charge left.
If you're just looking for quick point and shoot camera then check out your local Walmart if you have one, you can get a pretty good deal.

Big +1 on the S95.

That little bastard is bad ass. It damn near out shoots my DSLR, and the auto mode is incredible. Low light pictures are unbelievable.

You will not be disappoint.

I have this,

Seems pretty nice for under $200. I'm learning how to actually use the settings instead of the auto mode, I expect I'll want a DSLR by the end of the year. Just what I need, another expensive hobby.

Roger that.   And thanks for the input.   As indicated above, I will own one in about a week.   I may even get adventurous and learn to master all of the additional settings beyond auto shoot, but one thing at a time.

http://dpreview.com/ is a good site to find camera reviews.  They don't review every camera in detail but they do most and provide information on the others.

I made this journey not too long ago, and decided on the Panasonic Lumix TS2.

I wanted something that had high resolution, a very good auto mode, took true HD video, and could go anywhere with me. That meant it had to be waterproof and built like a tank.

So far, that camera has been canoeing down three rivers jumping in and out of canoes, up in a tree stand, camping, hiking, snorkeling, whirlyball, etc etc etc.

Nikon P90. Costs in the $299~ range.

Beware of getting TOO many megs of pixels in a small camera as they may not handle it well. Nikon has fabulous customer support & their web site is user friendly for folks like me that don't know much.

Trust me, you will love it.

Canon haters?  I recommended this canon and I shoot a Nikon DSLR.  I got the s90 (the older version of the s95) for my wife over a year ago.  It IS A LITTLE DYNAMO.  Canon went all out on this thing.  They actually downgraded the G10 sensor from 12M pixels to 10 on the same size sensor (which is whats in the s90/95).  Megapixels are not everything, they are used by manufactures to sell cameras and thats it.  When canon went to 10MP on the same sensor, the size of the pixels grow which mean the camera is more light sensative.  The low light shots with the S90/95 are truly amazing for a point and shoot.  These are the hotest point and shoots out there.

Centurion-  trust me, this camera will blow any other point and shoot camera you have used out of the water.  It is great on auto mode, but if you read into the manual even just for some of the beginner stuff you can get even more out of this camera.  Its best qualities are that it has a very wide lens (again, just like MP, high zoom lenses and used to sell cameras, when wide lens are more useful for everyday shooting) and amazing ISO (low light) performance.

The wife and I just bought an Olympus Stylus Tough (I think) it's supposed to be drop proof to 6' and waterproof to 12' which are the ways I generally kill electronic gadgets.  I haven't really tried it out much yet, but I'll be going fishing tomorrow and taking it along, we'll see how it does.
