Third of Russians think sun revolves around earth, poll finds

  • A third of Russians reject a sun-centered Solar system

  • Half believe radioactivity is a human invention

  • And 29% believe humans lived in the era of dinosaurs

DOES the sun revolve around the Earth? About one third of Russians
appear to believe so, according to a survey published today.

Thirty-two percent of Russians reject a sun-centered Solar system,
four percent more than in 2007 when a similar survey was conducted, the
Russian Center of Public Opinion Research showed.

I recently read a Carl Sagan book in which this topic is discussed. As of the mid 1990s when the book was published, polls showed similar (worse actually) numbers in The USA and China. about half were unaware of basic facts like heliocentric solar system, earth rotates once a day and the like. Sagan speculated that those numbers were likely at their highest in the west, and that could mean that half a millennium after Copernicus, a majority of the people of earth are not aware that the sun sits at the center of our solar system.

tl;dr we are all fucked

I wonder if that has anything to do with why they never made it to The Moon.

I've seen similar results here in the UK and in other countries. People are not much more intelligent or knowledgeable than our ancestors. No amount of "education" can change that.

Most people believe history and reality began when they were born and will end when they die. Anything that is outside of their knowledge or views of reality are considered wrong and evil and quickly rejected.

Not much different, I imagine. But it's cool to hate on Russians.
