sucks... When the zombies get about 2 inches (on the screen) from you, your rounds whizz right past them. I blew three zombie's heads off and they kept coming.

Put your mouse pointer on their head or body for it to work. Also if you shooting them as they first get up seems to work well afre a couple of rounds you get a shotgun, shift key to switch. 37 so far

You can shoot the skinny ones once in the leg to make them fall and then finish them off with a single headshot on the ground. Otherwise they take 3-4 shots.

Gotta do a body shot too to knock them down. Hit them while they're still coming out of the ground, or aim for the knees.
