I am just sitting here and was thinking about dogs. What good are they, I mean my goodness all the crap you have to put up with. First they come into your life you got to nurture them and train them. Then they demand to be at your side constantly and whats up with this tail wagging and licking. Next they mellow out and they still want to be at your feet  and they beg for you to pet them. They have this loyalty thing down so they are kings of pay it forward. Then they die and teach you what loss is all about leaving a hole in you.

They also help prepare you for the joys of the next one.  However, there is never a dog just like the last one.  Just like people, each is his own.

Dogs are an amazing companion animal.
My preferred breed is purebred German Shepards.  Have had 4 of them.
First one was difficult until some very knowledgeable folks trained me how to understand "Dog Language"
The tail, nose, ears, eyes, stance etc are all used to communicate with people.
Most owners choose to ignore this and try to turn the dog into a human.  Which frustrates both you and the dog.

Yes, dogs are work, but with it comes years of reward.

Before getting a dog, understand and accept that you will outlive him/her.
Cherish the years you have together.  There will be moments you will remember always.
When the time comes for their passing, don't get all wrapped up in your personal grief.
Honor the memory of your lost friend by getting another dog.
That's the way it works.

That said, dogs are also not for everyone.
Especially folks who live a self-centered life, or no time to walk, play or exercise a dog.
In that case, move on......nothing to see here.

Dogs kick ass.  No matter how bad your day is, a couple of sad eyes, a wet tongue, and a tail wag will lift your spirits.

No matter how much you yell at them for being bad, they still love you unconditionally.

Never heard that before, but it is awesome

OP, they aren't called man's best friend for nothing. The small amount of effort we have to give, compared to the years and years of loyalty, protection and companionship they give, is about the best deal you will ever find in this world. Like the old saying goes, "Better to have loved
and lost
than never to have loved
at all"
.

Sadly, experiencing loss is a part of life. I will miss my "Razor" until the day I die, same goes for the big dummy I have now. As much as it hurt me to watch him go, it was minute compared to the years and years of companionship we shared.

He was my dog, my protector and my best friend.

I'm mad...And that's a fact
I found out...Animals don't help
Animal think...They're pretty smart
Shit on the ground...See in the dark.

They wander around like a crazy dog
Make a mistake in the parking lot
Always bumping into things
Always let you down, down, down, down.

They're never there when you need them
They never come when you call them
They're never there when you need them
The never come when you call them down, down, down, down.

I know the animals...Are laughing at us
They don't even know...What a joke is
I won't follow...Animal's advice
I don't care...If they're laughing at us.

They're never there when you need them
They never come when you call them
They're never there when you need them
The never come when you call them down, down, down, down.

They say they don't need money
They're lvinign on nuts and berries
They say animals don't worry
You know animals are hairy?
They think they know what's best
They're making a fool of us
They ought to be more careful
They're setting a bad example
They have untroubled lives
They think everything's nice
They like to laugh at people
They're setting a bad example
(Go ahead) Laugh at me.

No alarm system in the world is as good as a dog. The dog lets you know someone is there BEFORE they try to get in your house.
Then, just the act of barking sends the bad guys running. If they were stupid enough to still try to come in, they will probably be attacked.

I read years ago that there is some kind of American Indian superstition / legend / belief about how dogs came to be so loyal to humans. It's something about how, after the creation, when the animal kingdom was grouping up and heading off into the wilderness and people were starting communities, dogs split off from the rest of the animals and crossed over to the people side...the only animals to do so.

This struck a chord with me, and has always been the explanation for the phenomenon that stuck with me.
