There is a small squadron of Messerschmitt BF-109's based at an airport about 20 miles from here. They that fly over my home . There's also a group of P-51's that flies out of my local airport. They also have a P-37 or two. Where is here? Are the Messerschmitts the Spanish Air Force version with the Rolls-Merlin engine? Those birds were the ones used in filming the classic movie, The Battle of Britain. |

I spent most of my youth under Final Approach at naval air stations back in the day when they were flying AD Skyraiders, P2V Neptunes, S2 Trackers, T-28 Trojans, SNJ trainers, Martin Mariner seaplanes, and so on and so on. Untold thousands of overhead passes of those radial engines permanently burned the sound into my brain. |

Spanish planes in the BoB movie were the Me.108 German planes in the BoB were Me.109 ....got off the coach from London one day about 20 years back....lived in a small town in Oxfordhire near a couple of RAF bases. JUST as I stepped off the coach I heard a strange aircraft engine noise - as in - "never heard one of them before" noises - it was the me.109G making its first flight following restoration work Very cool to see in the air - though a Rolls Royce Merlin engine is THE only way to travel for prop. aircraft!! |

Wrong. The Spanish 109 was the Hispano Aviación HA-1112. See here. The Merlin powered one was the HA-1112-M1L |
