I have fired one. I recall that if the bolt is closed with a loaded mag, and you drop the gun on the butt, then the bolt could travel back far enough not to reach the sear, and then the bolt would close chambering a round and fire. So they milled a notch into the reciever to turn the bolt and lock the bolt in place with the bolt handle/cocking knob.

despite appearances, they are actually fairly ergonomic, and they are very easy to shoot. while i don't fall into the "slower is more controllable" crowd, the sten's natural cyclic rate seems to be about "right" for that gun. they are simple, reliable, and require little maintenence. bonus for cheap mags.

i've been meaning to pick up a transferable MK2 and can it for some time now, but haven't gotten around to it. i'll be adding one this year com hell or high-water.

ETA: for the record, i think they make a terrible "first MG" gun though, unless the person buying it has shit-piles of time behind all types of MG's and knows that they want a sten.
