Seems like what she is postulating in the video would be easy to prove regarding structure and ownership, certainly dovetails with the stories about Google's CEO being in bed with the .gov. Someday people are going to realize that "Free" email and "Free website services" aren't really free at all. Someone is paying for all that programming and data storage...

Pretty interesting stuff. I keep telling myself that I am going to get off of it one of these days. This just gives me another reason.

How do you get off of it? I'm betting that the agreements to monitor your usage and behavior still apply in perpetuity even if you try to delete your FB account.

Given what Facebook and Google (and god knows who else) are doing, I'd be really interested to know what portion of data transfer on the internet today is actually people's computers tattling back to servers on what site they are visiting at that particular moment.

While I can certainly appreciate the sentiment, It started long before Obama. They say that technology is always used to enslave the population before it liberates it, I think that people are going to Rue The Day they ever got caught up with computers...

Don't put anything online you wouldn't tell a total stranger, in meatspace.

And yeah, I keep telling people too: your email is being used to direct advertising to you. Especially the freebie ones, Gmail (which I use and love, despite knowing this), Hotmail, Yahoo mail, etc.

Which also means that you are being tracked. Which also means that it would be pretty easy for .gov to track you, whether you're using FB or gmail or not. Just being online is enough.

I crumpled up my tin foil hat on New Year's Eve. Not I gotta make a new one.
