Admittedly I'm not *up* on current trends so don't rake me across the coals for being so ignorant.
The Playstation will always have a special place in my heart because that's what we had after we got married and I'd spend hours playing the Tomb Raider and Resident Evil series. Of course there were more but those 2 always stand out because of the sheer amount of time I put into them and pleasure I got out of them. Then we started having kids and gaming fell to the wayside. What does that saying even MEAN, anyway? We got a Wii for the kids and it's taking some major adjustment on my part because, although I like the interactiveness of it all, it's somehow not as *satisfying* as the old type of gameplay with the standard PS controllers. And most of the types of games I like (RE, for instance) are *on-rail* games. The awesomeness of RE and TR on Playstation is that you could explore anywhere you wanted and the games moved forward when YOU moved them forward. Now the games move without you and you're just along for the very confusing ride. Now, we have Red Steel on Wii and it's ok.......I like the swordfighting action but HATE shooting with the stupid remote. I know they have accessories for the different games but it seems very one-dimensional––––you plug in the gun for this particular shooting game and the tennis racket for this particular sports game, etc. Here's what I was thinking and here's where the above-mentioned ignorance comes in to play. With Kinect you don't need a controller at all, right? It senses your body movement? What I think would be badass is for there to be a set of accessories that you can wear and that the platform can sense and are interchangeable in a few seconds. Like, if you're playing a combat game you have a facsimile of a shotgun you can grab off your back and use, then put it back and grab your sword out of its sheath and use it, then grab your handgun out of its holster and use it––––-all within a few seconds and without having to plug anything in. I'm just imagining where we'll be in a few years and I fully expect to see the ability to use hand-to-hand combat with a holographic video game character in your living room. In the meantime.....does anyone know if they're still making the types of games I mentioned above with the same gaming styles for the newer platforms or would we have to buy the old PS or PS2? Excuse the rambling. I intended for this to be short and sweet. |

Games like Resident Evil and Tomb Raider? A few, but the genre has changed a bit. The new Tomb Raider is Uncharted. More shooting, platforming is a bit easier, puzzles a bit simpler too... but it's beautiful and everything feels satisfying. Resident Evil 5 is less like a traditional Resident Evil, but it's a good one in my opinion. I would say, though, that there are a majority of games now are 'on-rails' in the sense that you go here then here and here and here with little to not option to do anything but. You can pick up any of the two other consoles and find a plethora of games like that. |

Like the above poster stated. Uncharted is pretty good. If you want true free roaming, try out the Assassins Creed games, totally awesom. Also the Mass Effect games for Xbox are good for going ofp. Fall Out. Fable. Plenty of games to do your own thing and not on rails. The kinect seems cool, but I sure don't have enough space in my apartment for group games. Check out this really thorough review. http://www.anandtech.com/show/4057/microsoft-kinect-the-anandtech-review I bought my brother a playstation move, and it is really fun, but we still have the limited room factor in the apartment. |

The first game I bought for me for the the Wii was Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles. Not sure if that's *5* or not but I went from heart-pounding anticipation to bitter disappointment in about 10 minutes. I've been hounding him for an X-box but I've been hearing stuff about how the new Playstation technology is going to blow X-Box out of the water so I'm trying to hold out. Although, I can't remember how long it's been since I've heard that so it may have come to pass and been much ado about nothing. I'm so far out of the loop. |

I've been wanting the Assassin's Creed series since it came out years ago. And Fable too. We haven't had our PS or PS 2 in years and have hemmed and hawed over getting another system because we really didn't have time to play with the kids. Our youngest is almost 2 now and things are getting easier and some time is being freed up so I think a new one is on the horizon. Thanks for the link! |

I've heard on XM about a website called gamefly.com From what I remember on the ad it says you can rent games before you buy them. That way you're not stuck with a $50 game you don't like. If you like the game you rented, you can buy it from them for a discounted price. From the looks of the website, it's kind of like netflix. |

Use this website to catch up with gaming, it has a great recommendations list for all consoles.

The only reason I got a Wii was to amuse myself in Iraq, and for the Legend of Zelda. That and the old nintendo games. There are few games that aren't for both the PS3 and 360, and I like Halo so I went with the xbox.
OP you'd probably like a PS2 for starters if not a PS3; there's a shit ton of good games for the PS2 and you could get one for cheap I bet. |

The reason you are having trouble to adjust to new-fangled gaming is because you got the most adult-unfriendly console available...The Nintendo Wii. If you want a system that has games skewed for adults, get a X360 or a Playstation 3. They have games that are far more similar to Resident Evil and the Tomb Raider of old. Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles is in no way Resident Evil 5. RE5 debuted last year on X360/PS3, while the Wii got a crappy spinoff. You certainly want to ditch the Wii if you want decent core gaming titles. Left 2 Dead, Fallout, Mass Effect, Call of Duty ect. are best played on the 360 or PS3. There isn't any new 'Playstation technology to blow the X-box out of the water'. That ship sailed when Sony put some crappy tech into the GPU. The 360 and PS3 are more or less on par with eachother, with the PS3 having a slight edge due to Blu-Ray, but the 360 having a far superior library and much better online community. Here are a few examples of real, modern, core gaming: Fallout: New Vegas (X360/PS3/PC): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XmHjnJI8ds Mass Effect (X360, but coming to PS3 eventually....3 part trilogy with 2 parts out already): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIFojY2Ceow Heavy Rain (PS3): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKPPdgBK3r8 Left 4 Dead 2 (X360/PC): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T71rp_IBzOY&feature=fvsr Tomb Raider: Underworld (PS3/X360): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpsNES_zVj4 The Wii has almost no truly spectacular titles that aren't Nintendo-made. Whereas the PS3/X360 have gobs of fantastic games. Gamefly is a good idea. $15/mo (give or take) gets you a Netflix-type service that lets you try as many games as you want. |

I keep telling my brother to get gamefly because the amount of short crappy games being release is amazing. Just recently he bought the Medal of Honor epic beard game. 5 hours of gameplay and the campaign was done,, ON HARD. He ain't an online gamer so that was it $60 for 5 hours. Then he bought the Force unleashed 2(?), another 5-6hr game, and even worse is that there is no online competitive mode or anything of that sort. 6hrs for $60, glad it's his money and not mine. |

You combine the Kinect body recognition software along with something along the lines of a hacked/modded Wii that does head tracking(meaning virtual reality/3D with standard TV) and you will be getting close to what you want. Sword, gun, knife, all that stuff could be done now with an interactive holster that tells the system it is in play when it's removed from the holster, would allow for multiple things used at once like a knife in one hand and gun in other hand. If you don't know about the cracked/hacked Wii with head tracking, YOU NEED TO VIEW THIS. This is about 2-3 years old to boot. No need for special glasses as it morphs what is on screen based on where the shooter is standing in the room which is infinitely better for the player(though like he says, spectators will get sea sick due to wrong perspective). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw |

It just seems that all the game commercials/trailers that blow my mind are for X-Box. For the most part, releases are the same. However, the 360 still has a better catalog, overall. I have nothing to compare it to so YMMV. My only issue, other than available titles which is a universal thing, is there doesn't seem to be a way to show them fullscreen. Everything else shows in fullscreen......just not the instant streaming movies. |

Oh it's coming, don't worry. No need for special glasses as it morphs what is on screen based on where the shooter is standing in the room which is infinitely better for the player(though like he says, spectators will get sea sick due to wrong perspective). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw Yes, I can't wait for that sort of experience! |

Can anyone verify if there's any difference in Netflix streaming depending on which system you use? |

Just be aware that not all games for the xbox are available on the PS3, and vice versa.
The Uncharted series (1, 2, and an upcoming third title in late 2011) are the shit, but they are only available on the PS3. Likewise, most of the Halo games are 360 exclusive (at least the new one is). Mass Effect 2 as someone else already mentioned is coming to the PS3 in January, IIRC (it's a very good game as well). ME3 is coming out late 2011 as well, but I don't know if it is coming to the PS3 right away this time, or whether there will be another 6 month delay like there was for ME2. I am a PC gamer mostly, but of the 2 consoles I would probably pick the PS3 personally for the blue-ray capability and the ability to play the Uncharted games (seriously, they are kick ass games), plus the ability to do a bit more end-user customization for cheaper. On the other hand, as also stated, the xbox is pretty universally admitted as having a better online system all around. Pick one or the other, or do it the arfcom way and get both. Either way, 2011 is already for sure going to be a sweet year for gaming just based on the announced releases, so there should be plenty of good titles to pick from in the next 12 months for both consoles (and the PC!!). |
| I vote for the Xbox. I am 43 and recently picked up an Xbox. I also discovered a website called 2old2play.com. It is for gamers 25 and older. I have made so many friends on there. I play for an hour or two every night. Some people watch tv, I play games. It is how I unwind. Most people are xbox fans but there is a growing number of Playstation fans. |

Well if you want a grown up system get the PS3, it has better games then the 360 plus there is no gay monthly fee to play online. |
