just a question here but will the USMC take recruits over the age of 29?

[#1]
Yes, I saw a 31 yr old go through SOI.

[#2]
Yes you need a waiver though

Last time I check the oldest they take is 35 right. Thats assuming you can pass the physical requirements.

Yes. Had a recruit named Medina who was 31. Sgt. Perrine called him "funky old Medina".

Wasn't the oldest PFC in the history of the Marine Corps like 52?

29 is no problem. In basic we had a 34 year old. Drill Instructors nick named him the Grand old man of the marine corps..

We had a guy in my platoon that was 33 or 34. That was 12 years ago, though.

I knew a guy in 2002 that was 31. Dude was out of his damn mind, though. Always talking to himself...

If you can pass the PFT and the height and weight standards im sure you can get a waiver real easy

thanks all.  I figured I would need a waiver, I just was hoping my eligibility didnt die at 29.  I've had some ankle problems here in the last few years that I've had 2 surgeries on and I'm hoping that taking it really slow this time and mixing in the liquid glucosamine shot I'm starting to feel somewhat spry again.  Feel like I somewhat wasted my 20's and mix in being hurt with ankle problems I am weighing my future decisions and its good to know that I "could" have the option to go "should" my foot cooperate.

No, not right now.  Unless you are perfect in every way.  300 PFT, 4 year degree and a good reason on why you didn't do it before age 29.

Maybe R0N will come by with clarification but I run a recruiting sub station right now and we have been told no unless they are within my perfect scenario above.  We are basically full right now.

Sorry to shit on your thread.

4 year degree - check
excuse - medical problems hopefully corrected by surgeries, but really is there a "good" excuse?
300 PFT - with some training I know I could hit it

I dont know if I would want active duty or reserve.  I am leaning toward reserve cause I do have a good career in the Oil biz.  If my ankle cooperates the way I hope it does, what it boils down to is that I want to serve my country through military service.

I am retired and run a JROTC. We work with all the recruiters in our area of TX. Unless you have a 50 or above on the ASVAB, are a HS grad and have no physical issues they won't touch you for active duty here. There are too many qualified applicants lining up to get in. What flew a mere 2-3 years ago will get you flatlined these days...

There are exceptions to everything, but by all means don't get your hopes up. Speak to people who have specific answers. This board is not the place to get them.

where my question really came in was all the USMC has on its website is the active duty requirements of 18-29 yo.  I figured I would ask on here to see if anyone knew if the Marines have a staunch line of cutoff for age at 29, or do they have a waiver that can be signed.

I have been plagued by some dead bone issues and bone spurs in my left ankle and have had 2 surgeries to correct it over the last several years.  ANd after this 2nd surgery I am taking it ultra slow before I really get athletic again.  And the thought that I still have the possibilty to serve, provided this 2nd recovery brings my ankle back close to 100% is all the hope I need.  Cause at 31 and growing up playing sports my whole life and messing my ankle up in college and wanting to serve and couldnt, due to medical limitation that may be fixed now.... the thought of this going in a good direction helps lift me up to a more positive frame of mind.  I would rather have my hopes up at this point that having them completely dashed when I do have a true desire to serve.

And if my ankle doesnt get any better than it is now and I cant serve, well I will just deal with it when that reality (should it happen) sets in and I will find another way to do something for this county and the Military.  For now I will get my hopes up and be dedicated to my recovery and see where it goes.

With your surgeries there's practically no way that you'll be able to join the Marines at your age. I'd look into the Army or National Guard.

I run a station and I've had to turn away every person 29+ for 3 years now.

I'm sorry.

your full of good news arent you?

Marines is my first choice and if its a no go, its a no go.  Army still has plenty of things I would want to do.  I've always wanted to jump out of perfectly good airplanes

You would be nuts to join at that age. It would be like joining your local high school varsity team. 30 is a world away from 18.

I turned 25 in boot. I was the old man until i left active duty. Never fit in with the 18 yr olds, wasnt allowed to chill with guys my own age.

In boot we had a 32 year old named edgerly, DI's called him elderly.

If you aren't physically qualified to join the military, you could always join the Air Force.

I went through boot camp in San Diego in 1968. We had a guy that was 28 years old who had been in the Army and had been to VietNam
in 1966. He never said anything about his time in the army until graduation day when he was in his dress greens with his previous awarded ribbons. This guy had been awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the Silver Star and a couple of others that I can't remember what they were. I did notice that he didn't have a marksmanship badge on his uniform as he didn't qualify with the rifle at Camp Pendeleton.

We asked him how Marine boot camp was comparred to army boot camp, his reply was that the USMC boot camp was a ball buster comparred to army boot camp and even their jump school. I can't remember what his mos was but it wasn't 0300 (infantry) as he had a belly full of that in VietNam.
