Poke around at the lock of handcuffs with a pen after putting them on the perp? What are they doing?

Locking the cuffs so that they don't get tighter.

The back of the cuff key has a little stub for that, you'd likely break your pen dicking around in there.

Not a pen.  It's a key for double locking them.

Jk.. Like everyone else said, Double locking them so you cant  make them tighter, plus makes them harder to pick.

Unless the perp is a real dick. Then you leave em single locked so they get tighter as they squirm around.

I was issued handcuffs in 1984 that could be double locked. I honestly don't think I've ever seen a pair that you could not double lock?

They lock the cuffs so that way they don't get tighter and tighter while in the car.

I use my pen all the time for it.  Different makers use different methods for the double lock.  Most require the back end of a handcuff key to slide a little lever.  Some require a push of a small button (which a pen works great for).

I have a pair of my Grandpa's cuffs from the 50's - early 60's....they double lock.

engaging the double lock mechanism which keeps the bail of the cuff from tightening any further.

Actually it's not just locking them to keep them from getting tighter. It's locking them to prevent picking.

If you don't double lock the cuffs, I can get them open with a bic lighter or any sliver of shim stock type metal.

Well then you're better at it than I am. When I was taught to do it, we unlocked them before attempting to shim or pick.
