yep, the quickest way to start a revolution in this country would be to disallow employee withholding and make the sheep write their tax check every month.

there's a reason that your taxes are deducted up front...

1099 guys understand that.

Taxes and insurance will rape you.

State income

My withholding for the year, including fed and state, will be around $19k.

Add in my medical and 401(k), and it is getting close to $30k.

Just to add to the pain, think of property taxs, sales taxs, taxs on fuel, etc., etc., etc.................
I cannot understand why the government wants the system to fail - 'they' need the taxpayers to continue supporting the 'system'.  Wish I was a baker or stockbroker with connections ....
Just saying.

My property taxes are $2,217 a year.

I don't even want to try and calculate sales taxes and taxes on fuel.

If you really want to rage, remember that even after you pay all the taxes that come out of payroll, you still have to pay tax and excise every time you buy:

Gasoline
Beer
Cigarettes
Cereal grains or products made from them
Anything in a state with sales tax
Firearms and ammunition
Anything imported
Anything made domestically
Utility bills
Mortgage payments
Any government license or permit
Medical care
...
...
...

The actual effective tax rate (not just what you see gone from your check) is around 55% for the 35k-50k/yr income range.

Don't get me started.  Self-employed, I write a check each year big enough to buy a damn nice car or truck.  Yes, I do pretty well, but I have worked my ass off since I was 18, and continue to do so to this day.

The government is a big pig.

Look on the bright side, that is about how much I will make this year. The economy hasn't been the kindest, but you know what, I will still end the year with more money than I started with, and have more stuff.

It could be a hell of a lot worse man.

My dad is a stockbroker. He's actually the regional president for the firm. He has many many connections. In 1 year they taxed him out of more money than the majority of the country makes in a year. FBHO

Just calculated mine.  Even taking my 401k contributions into account, it was higher than the OP's, and I don't pay CS.

Do you get hit with capital gains too? That shit really boils me over considering the massive risk I take earning that money.

Someday I would like to calculate my total tax burden for a year including property, sales, fuel etc.. but I doubt I could stomach it.

I never look at the taxes.  Why, you might ask?

Because if I looked at it every pay check, I wouldn't be able to control my anger.  Kinda like teh reason I don't watch the news often or listen to talk radio.

Don't want to depress you, and I'm also still bound by secrecy laws, but when I worked for a state tax authority I was privy to what some Fortune 100 companies pay a year in taxes... would you be surprised to know it is less than what many of you pay?  No, I can not name company names.
