I need to pick up a good bottle of rum before Christmas (my MexiCoke needs an alcoholic partner).  I don't like Bacardi.  The bottle I just finished off was Sailor Jerry, which I thought was pretty good.  Got a deal on a bottle of Cruzan, so I picked that up to try it, and I'm so far unimpressed –– I'll keep it for company   Recommendations?

Appleton Estate Reserve Jamaican Rum. For the money.  It is better than Sailor Jerry's. Sailor Jerry's is a mixer rum. It tastes pretty good as a mixer.

I've actually kind of been wondering about the Appleton Estate, but no one I know has ever had it.  Might pick up a bottle to try out.

What's considered "expensive" in the rum world?  I'm more of a whiskey kind of guy when it comes to liquor... my interest in rum is new.

They have like a Pyrat cask in the $200 range per bottle..

Im a rum enthusiasts but have never drank it and probably never will. At least on my dime.

I think for a good rum some Mount Gay Barbados or that Appleton Jamaica suits the taste for a good rum without breaking the bank.

I agree. This is a very smooth rum. Goes great with a good cigar
and big boobies rubbing on your neck. mmm-hmm.

Good stuff. Keep the Coca Cola out of it, these are for drinking straight up.

How can you drink that? I bought a large bottle and gave it away after two drinks. It may be the worst rum I've ever tasted.

For mixing, I like the Don Q Gold.  Better than Bacardi and cheaper (if you can find it).  Morgan and Sailor Jerry are also good for mixing.

For sipping rum (with a splash of water on the rocks), Angostura 1919 is the best I've found yet.  Zaya is pretty good too.

Goslings is good for a Dark & Stormy made with Barrit's Ginger Beer, as made in Bermuda.

My rum picks are Barbados rums - Mount Gay or Cockspur, preferably the aged dark rums.

If you can get it where you're at, try The Kraken.  I'm hardly a rum connoisseur, but I thought this stuff was amazing.  It's really dark.

Don Q! Don Q! Don Q!

Gold for sipping on the rocks (has a chocolate, smoky taste).  Regular for mixed drinks or on the rocks.

I have a hard time finding it stateside, but for $10 bottle at the duty free store, I buy half a case every time I'm down there.  I usually despise rum, but this is some of the best I've ever had.

Pour a liter or two into a sealed container with two, fresh sliced pineapples for ~two weeks.  The favor of many wimmenz, and pie, will ensue

In the, "cheap but whoa!" category, the Brugal distillery in the Dominican Republic puts out a lot of swill.  Most of their stuff is strictly mixer-grade.

But.

They have one variety, the Extra Viejo, that is fantastic.  I originally picked some up down there, savored every drop, went back, stocked up, then came back and found the stuff in my neighborhood boozery a week later.  If I'da known they're importing it now, I'da not carried heavy glass bottles through 3 airports and two busses.

When I'm out of Brugal EV, I fall back on Sailor Jerry's or Appleton.  I like a good rum on ice.
