One of the first films I saw growing up. Mom censored the whole hit and run scene but pretty much left the rest of the movie in tact. Also reaffirmed that Malcom Mcdowell is awesome.

Catchya later.

BTW is a full loop in a chopper possible now?

It was possible back then, before back then. See Sikorsky S-67. When Cochran was saying it was absolutely impossible, he really was a fool not to know about it.....or maybe he was talking like a politician, being silent on certain things to make his statements true.

My father owned the company that leased most of those helicopters to the studio for the filming of Blue Thunder (and Tron, and Airwolf).
I remember it well.

S-52 loop from 1949

Cochran asks Murphy if he wants to show him the loop when the latter is flying the Ranger. To do it in a Ranger would be a stunt because of the tittering rotor system. The whole bird hangs from the rotors, from the Jesus Nut, which is how it is stressed. It's not stressed for the bird to be pushing down on the rotor.

But not all helicopters are tittering rotor systems......I don't know what Sikorsky or Aerospatile is. Nor if the Hughes 500 Cochran was flying could do a loop. I was with a helicopter pilot when I saw "Capricorn One" and we got to the Hughes 500, Biplane chase. His immediate comment was the the Biplane was in trouble...though he might have an advantage in a loop.

Bell helicopters, then, tended to be tittering rotor. However, in 1988, Av Week had on its cover a 4 bladed Huey or Bell 222 which could do barrel rolls.....I don't recall if the article said it could do loops, only that it lost altitude quickly inverted.

I've seen vids of Bell 407 and the Bell 730 (Bigger brother to Airwolf) do loops and rolls, though the 407 was not intended for it, a South African pilot did it at an airshow and that one is on Youtube, I can't remeber where I saw the 430 doing it, I think it was off the Bell helicopter website and it was done by the test pilots.
