Finally got cable/internet in my new apartment, and I think something might be wrong with my Netgear wireless router.  When I run my computer right to the cable modem, the internet works fine (the data send/receive lights go crazy like they should).  When I connect the modem to the wireless router and then connect the computer, I have no internet.  The data send/receive lights go blank.  Help?

1) make sure you are plugging the cable modem into the WAN port on the netgear. The computer goes into the 1-4 ports.

2) You may have to clone your PC's MAC address on the router as some ISP lock it to one specific peice of hardware.

To do this, get it all plugged in. then log into your netgear from your PC. Look around for MAC Clone or some such setting. It should be pretty simple.

plug the modem into the wan port on the router.

you also might have to login to the router login to the administrator tab and do a setup default to wipe out any previous settings

Try turning off or unplugging the cable modem. Then plug the network cable into your router. Make sure your router is turned on. Then turn on or plug in the cable modem.

Some cable modems will only talk to whatever they are plugged into when they power on.

If this doesn't work, you'll have to clone your PCs MAC.

check for a firmware update.

if it still doesn't work, try the router at another location to verify its working.

after that replace it

Ok, I tried the MAC clone thing again, only this time I hand-entered the address instead of letting the router do it.  Works fine now.  Thanks
