Is 30 years the average lifespan of an aircraft carrier?  That seems a bit early to me.

I saw this, or another just like it for sale a few years ago for about 2 mil. I wanted to buy it and launch atv's off it. That, and hire a lot of young girls in naughty sailor suits to serve drinks.

American carriers are designed with a 30 year service life built in.  A "Service Life Extension Program" costs 40% of the cost of building a new one, and gets you another 15 - 20 years.

These "years" are continuous years of use, during which the carrier is unavailable sometimes due to periods of yard availabilty, Major Overhauls, etc, etc.

One of the reasons the BBs were brought back into service, and that there was discussion of retaining them, is that they had not seen continuous service, and thus had up to 20 years of service life left in the engines and miscellaneous machinery.

Also, our gun cruisers were operated continuously, and thus had been run smack out of life at that point.

As a frame of reference, the NAe São Paulo was purchased in 2000 for a measly $12mil. My guess is that the Invincible will go for no more than 3x that price.
