I said at the beginning of the season no way Johnson would get 5. I'll eat crow and say I hope he gets it over Hamlin.

I wouldn't have minded seeing Hamlin win it about 2 weeks ago. After seeing his whiny crybaby act after Johnson and Harvick have cut into his points lead over the last couple weeks, I hope he wrecks in the first lap this week. He doesn't deserve a championship.

This has been an odd chase though. The points are really close going into the last race, and the fact that the 48 team ditched their entire pit crew and used Gordan's crew last week makes it seem like they're reaching for something to help them keep up. I think it's going to come down to dumb luck who wins it. Johnson has just been a bit off this year.

OK so I don't really follow NASCAR but I'm interested in it and I like Jimmie Johnson.

Can you explain what he has to do to win?  I don't know about NASCAR point system, etc.

Just finish a few spots in front of Hamlin and Harvick.  I will se if I can find the exact numbers.

Here's everything you need to know about the NASCAR points system, it's lame.

Joking aside, (it's sports, I can't really say, seriously,) has anyone out there in the 'net crunched the numbers to figure out how many championships Johnson would have won under the old points system?

It seems someone has, tho I can't vouch for his data,

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker
Under the Classic points system Jimmie would have won the 2006 & 2009 Championships.

& just for the hell of it...

Year Driver (championship number)
2004 Jeff Gordon (5)
2005 Tony Stewart (2)
2006 Jimmie Johnson (1)
2007 Jeff Gordon (6)
2008 Carl Edwards (1)
2009 Jimmie Johnson (2)

(if the Classic format was used from 2004 to 2009)

Source, if you can call it that.

Notice how the tv cameras have been focusing on the track and trying not to show the stands at all this year.  The spectator numbers have been way down and they are trying to hide it.

No, I want him to win. As long as Brian France insist on this stupid "Chase" I hope the 48 wins it every year. He would only have won two and Jeff Gordon would have won two more if the old system were still in place. There is enough drama in the world with out the sanctioning body creating it at the end of the year.

No shit..I think if you actually wanted to go to a Bristol night race, you can buy tickets at face value without having to buy a diecast car for $500..I know it's easy to get tickets to Loudon now, compared to a few years ago when every ticket was sold months before the race.

The stands would have been overflowing if Denny Hamlin had won in a Toyota.

Meh, definitely not a fan of the Chase here.  I hate how you can do middle of the pack all year but towards the end, you get lucky or have a few good races and can win versus having to actually do good ALL year long consistently to win.

Yeah, I don't like the Chase, either.  Basically, some people got butt-hurt because Matt Kenseth won the 2003 championship by being consistent rather than by winning every race, so they had to ruin the old point system.

I don't have a problem with Toyota. I have a problem with Hamlin. I think the other poster feels the same, and notice we are both from VA.

There are entire sections of seat at Dover that are covered with huge advertisement banners.  Every track's attendance is down, TV ratings are down.  But don't worry, Brian "The Brain" France will introduce a mid-race belching competition to get the fans back.  The brains and talent in the France family ended with Bill Jr.

Or maybe they'll put big rims with spinners on the cars, play gangsta rap over the PA, and use their "Drive For Diversity" to bring new fans to the races.
