My health care cost is up $60 a month. The insurers said that it's Obama care driving the increase. No Pre-existing conditions, end to lifetime limit of $4million, and having to ensure everyone's kids until 26 has driven it up. Also benefits are down. My deductible is up. Ahh, hope sure is draining my change.... |

The amount your health insurance premium goes up as an employee may have more to do with your employer then the increase in the premium. At my company, we pay a fixed amount per employee, with the employee paying the balance of the health insurance premium. As a result, unless we choose to contribute more to offset a premium increase, the entire increase in the premium is born by the employee. This can suck immensely for the employee since last years 27% increase would have been a 300% increase in the out of pocket amount paid by the employee (except we increased our contribution to absorb most of the increase). Also, last year's 27% increase also had an increase in the deductible for the plan we had (From $100 to $250). This year, the increase is comparable to last years, but most of the increase is not an increase in the basic premium, but as a result of our "risk factors". Apparently our employees use the insurance too much. But for the increase in our risk factors, the premium would have gone up only 9% (about three times inflation, versus last years 10 time inflation).Personally, I have seen the cost of providing health insurance to my employees go up faster than anything else over the last few years. I blame both political parties. The system we had was broken and needed fixing. Neither the Republicrats nor the Demipublicans have done anything to keep insurance premiums from spinning out of control. They are both beholden to interest groups not interested in keeping premiums under control. My partner and I have not talked yet about how to deal with this years increase. It will result in about $100 more per month under a single person plan. BTW, my business is small enough that I will be exempt from penalties for not having insurance. We provide insurance to attract and keep good employees. Bah. |
