As a broke college kid what is the cheapest I can build an AR for? I've been watching the EE but don't want to eat ramen for an entire month to buy one. I made roughly 5-6k this summer it all went to bills and school. I was shocked because I figured I'd finally get a nice setup but no such luck.

See if DSA still has "blem" lowers for $60

Then just troll EE until you find deals on the rest of it

So building one will be my best best? Built an ak before so just wondered about the difficulty of it.

If you can build an AK, you can build assemble an AR.

Edited for obvious reasons.

ARs are the easiest thing on earth to build.

You could get a decent AR for $650

Check out Del-Ton carbine/rifle kits. Has everything you need, but a stripped lower.

I might upgrade their BCG though. BCM is only $30 more than the Del-ton.

I built one with zero firearms experience, and only the brownells videos to guide me.  Anyone, and I mean, anyone, deaf dumb or blind, can build one.  If you can get a complete receiver buy it, the roll pins are a bitch to install, but are definitely doable.

A del-ton kit is a great way to go once you have a lower. The only downside I and think of is that you're tempted to put stuff in the kit that you don't need. But hey, they're a site sponsor and give you a discount.

For $650 you can get a CMMG bargain bin AR. Nothing wrong with those.

As a guy who started off building AK's and then tried AR's, you'll have no troubles. You don't get steel slivers, bleed or use a BFH on anything. I just put one together with EE parts and Surplus Ammo's lower and BCG for a hair over $500. Then I promptly swapped it for a Polish underfolder this morning

one of those dpms kits that were on sale for 400 plus lets say 80$ for a stripped lower for under 500$ build

BCM.

With BCM's current "reduced" prices, I think you will have a hard time putting together an upper of comparable quality for less than what you can buy one assembled from BCM for.

This has been discussed several times here and "elsewhere" and the answer is buy a BCM upper.

Maybe buy the BCM upper and save your sheckles until it's a financially viable time to buy the rest?

The Cavalry Arms lowers that DSG Arms has for $125 are a decent deal, since they include the stock, buffer tube and takedown pins.

These lowers are no longer in production, so they won't be available forever. They weigh about a pound less than a typical aluminum lower - Combine one with a thin-profile upper, and you've got a light, handy rifle.

You can easily get a decent, functioning AR for around $500, as others here have said. Patience will be a key part, in that you'll have to keep your eye on the EE, and wait 'till the deals come across the plate.

It won't be your last either, BRD is a fun illness to have .

Although I have not YET bought from them, look at M&A Parts in the Industry section, then add an essential arms $85 lower.

I picked up a Spikes lower for $89 when they were on sale.    I trolled the EE for the rest of my parts, and ended up spending a total of around $500 to $550 on my latest build (20 inch A2)

My last build cost me $575 for a functioning mid-length carbine with A2 stock.

A budget build I have been thinking about:

Plum Crazy complete lower: $130

DSA upper: $275

BCG and CH: $125

$530+ shipping and transfer

Unless you want a fixed carry handle-all the bargain bin rifles have been M4 typre carbines with A3 uppers. If you want a simple A2 rifle you pretty much have to do a kit build or pay $900+ for a new Bushmaster(last one I saw in my area was $1250, and it sold.)

Used Colt M16 barreled upper: $200 off the EE

New CMT BCG and CH: $125 from a board dealer (Bravo Company maybe?)

New Sabre Defense marked complete Cavalry Arms lower: $200 from Cavalry Arms

I actually had a $100 gift certificate for CavArms that I won in a match, so it only cost me $425.

Another recent, similar, budget build:

Used Colt M16A2 barreled upper: $210 off the EE

New LMT BCG: $120 from Bravo Company

New Surplus Arms stripped lower: $60 from AIM Surplus

New Anvil Arms LPK: $60 from Anvil Arms

Used Bushmaster A2 stock: $40 off the EE

$490 total:
