SA Milspec 1911 with one mag of 230 gr FMJ

or

Dedicated .22 AR (Spikes or CMMG)  with a couple of 26 round mags of CCI Mini Mags

Assume both are equally reliable.

(I think I know how this will go, but I was surprised by the answers a few buddies gave the other day at lunch.)

I thought so too until I was surrounded at lunch the other day and it was 2:1 in favor of the .22.

You have a phone and can dial 911 then lock your self in a safe room.

Why all the gun talk here.

Easier to deal with than the bloody stump you're left with when your G-lock explodes.

I dig my Spikes .22 upper, but .22LR isn't exactly known to be a reliable cartridge...caliber aside.

Yeah somebody was telling me the other day that they want to get a sig 22 rifle for HD stuff. I tried questioning for a minute but then realized I didn't want to go down that road.

I'm a pistol guy so it's easy.

Also, I wouldn't trust my lift to a rimfire.

1911 in the poll. I have a 1911, but AR (in 5.56) is my GTG for bump in the night.

A tough choice between 1911 and 911

Personally, I'll take a long gun over a handgun, even with the caliber difference.  Making hits is easier and faster.  And if it's my home defense gun, it's going to have a light on it, which is going to be much easier to do with a long gun.

Also, I don't know how many people are in my house.  I'm going to go with the larger mags.

.22 from a rifle is nothing to sneeze at.  Many brands of HP will expand and still meet the FBI minimum.

Centerfire is preferable to rimfire for a variety of reasons, reliability being high on the list.

Assuming equal reliability, both of the gun and the ammo, I'd take the long gun.

I've had better luck with Federal Bulk rimfire primers than I've had with Remington centerfire primers.
