Anyone ever get a remote starter for their car/truck?
I'm thinking it's a cool idea. What's a good brand/price? Is this something the average guy could install or how much should that cost as well? Thanks |

Installed one on an old thunderbird I had years ago. Did the door locks, and the power windows too... Also wired in the headlights to go on when the wipers went on. Worked great...took me about 5 hours to install the thing... I imagine you would have to do something to bypass the smart key systems on all of the new cars these days. |

Expensive, fuel-wasting method of fucking up the wiring on your vehicle, IMO. The only thing that causes more electrical system grief than aftermarket security systems is aftermarket remote engine starting systems.
If you want a warmed-up engine for your morning commute, get an engine block heater and a timer instead. |

Amen, I've built police vehicles from the ground up for the last 3 years and I wont touch an electric start. The amount of rewiring required on most newer vehicles specifically around the ignition system is not cool. Don't even consider installing one yourself unless you are technically adept, or you have a friend who does great work. I wouldn't trust it to the local best buy or someone that isn't highly reputable. I've seen and repaired several botched installs, one of which had to be flat bedded back to ford to have the Immobilizer thoroughly reworked. |
| I have one installed on my truck but it been f'ed up twice now i made huffines fix it, but shamrock refused to fix what they screwed up. I in stalled my viper system mostly by myself but paid some marine engineer 50 buck to help me finish it up. it well worth the fun you can have with it, i scared and messed with so many people when it worked. |

| Another vote for CompuStar. I had this one installed a couple years ago for $300 or so. Have had zero problems with it. |

I have a astrostart on my truck. Almost 5 years no problems . Get a 2 way no matter what brand. Mine can be set to start every couple hours if needed in very cold weather . It will even turn on with my heated seats . I Know but its a diesel and it takes a while to warm up if i can't plug it in. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Quoted: My Tahoe has one and it's the balls in the winter. About ten minutes before I'm ready to head out the door I just go out on the deck and mash the button. By the time I get behind the wheel, all the frost is gone and hot air is blowing. Good to go. I've got a Tahoe too. What system do you have installed? |

Factory installed only, as in it came with the vehicle. Or dealer installed OEM accessory ( usually just requires programming, no chop-shop wiring). GM has had it as an option for several years now, for some damn reason Mazda and Hyundai have not jumped on the bandwagon yet They are damn nice in the winter and in the summer. Went and saw Transformers 2, when we came out of the theater a woman and her young son were walking towards my 2008 Pontiac G6 GXP Street Edition Coupe and I hit the remote start, heard the kid say "look mom a its a transformer!"

I had one in my last pickup, but it got totalled a couple of years ago. It sure was nice on cold winter mornings and even better on hot Oklahoma 104* afternoons.
The best part about it was that you could leave the vehicle running while you went into a store, just click the remote and take the keys with you but the engine would keep running. You could still lock the doors and ff anyone touched the brake pedal (necessary to take it out of "Park") it would kill the engine instantly and you had to re-insert the key to start it again afterward. I left it running at a Quik-Trip convenience store and came out to find a cop standing next to my pickup (they hang out at Quik-Trips). He started in on me about leaving my pickup running and how someone could have stolen it. I told him that I'd give him a hundred bucks if he could get in it and drive it to the street without me stopping him. He thought it was a joke until he finally got into the driver's seat and touched the brake pedal. The engine died instantly. |

I had a computstar starter installed on my Tacoma last year. It rocks during the winter! I like it so much I'm thinking about having one put in my Toyota car as well.
I believe it was $300 installed, but I honestly don't remember. They lumped it all together with lift, wheels, tires, amp, subs, tint, etc, so I don't remember EXACTLY how much the starter was. |

I've got compustar for my Jeep, it rocks in the winter! I've got a Compustar for my truck... They're pretty much standard issue up here in Alaska. It makes getting ready for work in the morning nice in the winter. Push the auto-start, brush teeth, put contacts in, zip up flight suit, and got get into a warm truck. |

I've lived in AK all my life, cold cars are just something I deal with. And I like manual transmissions, so I'll probably never get a remote starter. |
